tire pressure

Fairly new to pulling. Have an M and 400 farmall that we took to a local pull a few weeks ago. Had a bit of a hard time "hooking up" to the ground and spun out a bit early. I"m thinking we had too much tire pressure but not sure if there is a general "sweet spot" tire pressure to start at and then play around. Both tractors are stock. Thanks for any help.

I see nobody has answered you yet I will tell you what little I know . I Am not your best scource because i am starting to pull again after being away from it for 30 years. My first pull several months ago my tire pressure was 20 lbs. and I spun out like you. The next pull I dropped pressure to 14 lbs. and placed a second and fourth place. I have been told by other pullers you can run tire pressure 14lbs. down to 8 lbs.. My next pull I am going down to 12 lbs. and see what happens. You also have to watch experienced puller and learn how to read the track. I pull a Farmall 450 weighing 6,600 lbs in farmer and local classes.

It generally costs $15-20 a hook to find out. Every tractor, tire, track, and hitch will affect this tire pressure number. There is no magic number out there and will take some trial and error.

Rule of thumb for old bar road worn tires 2-2.5 lbs per 1000lbs of weight it goes up to 3-3.5 for newer tires hope this helps. You want a flat hole after the pull if its rounded you had to much air if its humped in the middle then you have to little

ALL DEPENDS ON WEIGHT OF THE CLASS YOUR IN, HOW MANY PLY YOUR TIRES ARE,HOW WIDE YOUR RIMS ARE, IF YOUR A HEAVY TRACTOR IN A LIGHT CLASS RUN THE ON THE LOW SIDE,IF YOUR WEIGHTS ARE ALL ON AND YOUR LOADED FOR BEAR,BUMP THEM UP A BIT, AND WHEN YOUR DONE PULLING,LOOK AT YOUR HOLES ? IF NICE FLAT AREA ,YOUR OK. I THERE"S A HUMP IN THE MIDDLE,YOU HAVE GONE TO LOW ON YOUR PRESSURE, I RUN NO LOWER THE 10 LBS EVER AND HAVE NEVER GONE OVER 14 LBS HERE IN THE NEW ENGLAND AREA , I PULL STONEBOLT AND TRANSFER SLEDS AND DO VERY WELL ON BOTH, I RUN 18.4X38"S ON A DIESEL MOLINE

If you have old hard tires start at 12 and work from there. Also all tire gauges do not read the same so if you get it where you want it buy another gauge to compare in case you loose or wear out the one you start with and get it where you want it.

I go down to about 10psi in my old, road worn firestone's on my Farmall H. Run classes 4500# to 6500#. Your performance can vary depending on tread. For example, I can hook up good on a dry, hard track. I can't do anything if its a mud hole.
