spark plug readers....

You guys who know what you sere looking for in a spark plug, just wonder what you make of these plugs. Tractor runs good, just want to know what is good/bad in a plug. Thanks.

I would be proud of those. I wouldn't change a thing...

Autolite 386 or AC C86 plugs are about the best you can get (for the applications that use that size plug).

Hi was always told by my dad Light brown is a good plug color when you take them out.
So as other poster said leave well alone.

A good cocoa brown color is what I have always been told to shoot for. I don't think you can do much better than they look. You don't have any oil or carbon build up, so your engine is in good mechanical condition and your carb mixture is right on.

looks good to me also. has nice flat electrode and good gap which shows plugs are in good shape yet. bad is carbon build up, rounded electrode with a wide gap from extended use. but for the guys with spark plug cleaners which is next to none, the plugs can be cleaned by being sand blasted and file the electrode flat and regap and basically like new again. lots of people throw plugs away that there is nothing wrong with them.just because they dont know what to look for. ooh, i hear its champions! but thats all crock anyway.

I have cleaned a many a plug over the years with the wire wheel on my bench grinder. Then filed the electrode and regapped. Learned to do that from my dad. I am only 35 and it was not until this year I actually witnessed my first true spark plug failure. It was on my daughters 150cc go-kart. It would fire fine cranking the engine over, checking for spark. The engine would run fine at idle and you could feather the gas and finally get some RPM, but it would not handle any load what so ever. Everything pointed towards the carb. I read a bunch of forums based on those engines and go-karts and that seemed like the go to thing. Ordered a new carb, same thing. Checked fuel flow, everything I could think of. Finally got a new plug because it was one of those special order metric jobs, and Vroooooommmmmm! I felt like a complete idiot!!! I had my spark tester on it and everything. It's just when it got under compression it didn't have enough fire to light more gas than at idle.

Moral of the story is a good cleaning and gapping and most plugs will last a long time.

You have obviously never had an ACTUAL Champion plug problem. When the (Champion) D21 plugs go dead under load during the first pull, you come off the track, replace with Autolites trackside, and pull the next 4 years without an issue... that is a Champion plug problem.

Maybe that's part of my problem of never having but one plug problem in all my years. I only run Autolites in everything I own. If I buy something that has Champions in it, even if they are brand new the first thing I do is replace them and throw the Champions in the trash can. I don't even keep them around for a test plug. My dad, uncle, and cousins said they have lost a lot of money over the years due to Champion plugs going bad on them at the strip and on the track back before they wised up and switched to A/C and Autolites.
