tractor question

I have a farmall H and i'm going to install a C175 engine into it but I have a chance to buy a massey harris 33. From information I have found that they are close on hp but the MH has a larger displacement engine. From what I know that there is no replacement for displacement. I have never pulled against the MH or even drove one. I pull in improved stock classes and almost always power out. Both have 12.8x38 tires.

Lower gearing is always better than displacement in 3mph pulls. I beat guys with my low geared H. I was the lowest HP tractor and I won. I couldn't compete in 3-8mph pulls though. Totally different story there.

I have to disagree with pretend farmer. There is no substitute for cubic inches. The more power you have, you can run up a gear or two higher and keep your ground speed, while staying just under the speed limit. Ground speed of the tractor and sled will nnalert dragging it at 1 mph 95% of the time.

One other thing to take into account is availability of parts especially the 33s. Im a massey guy and every rebuild hurts the billfold. IH will definatly be cheaper but in my opinion a H is overweight for HP. A 33 massy will weigh in at about 4200 lbs with tin rims and narrow front.

My H with me on it is a shade over 4300. If I pulled the hydraulic pump out and dropped my wheel weights Im around 3900 something. I wont speak for a normally geared H but a low geared one, proper tires, properly inflated and all else equal will beat you any day because I can put more weight where it counts.

PF,you have a lot to learn yet.I'am glad you won and am happy for you.I have been pulling maybe twice as long as you have been alive(and still learning)and have NEVER seen a chain that long.Knowing Hs &Ms with and without the low gears, you don't have a decent 5000#puller in the areas and sleds-chains I and most everyone else has pulled on.

If you are willing to listen, and spend the money.
Probably doesn't make any difference. I pull against
a H with 115 hp and a 33 with almost that much. Also
a 50 MF with near to 100. The 50 MH won the 4500 lb.
class last Friday at the 50 yrs. of progress pull at
Rantoul Il. It pulled 3rd gear at 2500 rpm. Almost
6mph with 14.9 X 38's. So you can make a winner out
of almost anything you want to build. Vic

I got a news letter earlier this summer from a pulling organization in south central MA. PF's area. I pulled with them a couple times. most of their pulls are stone boat. It could be his "association" Their rules didn't work for me. The news letter stated that they had 9 tractors at a pull that they had just recently had.

Thank you all for your input. I think I'll stick with the H because I can pull in 4k & 4.5k around here. I think if I run the c-175 with a good cam, rockers, and some match porting and blending on the head she will run good. If the lowest you can get the 33 to is 4200 with me it will be 4450. If I had unlimited funds I would do both.

It is called cubic dollar. Vic is right all brands can be made to run. olivers and AC or portably the cheapest to build because you can swap stock parts and make a decent puller.
