simple safety devise that saved my brothers motor.

Friday night my brother went to a pull in ny ulster co fair.... he checks over his 560 tractor all the time this is a stock tractor.....well he went to move his tractor. I am guessing I was not there, and the cottor pin broke and the pin came out of the throttle/ governor rod and stuck the tractor wide open.....very fast he shut off key nothing chocked it 2 foot flame cam out the pipe ,but still nothing reached over and clicked the main battery disconnect switch which he put on not in rules....tractor shut right down.....saved the motor from coming apart and could have hurt people.... $20-30 part worked.... something to think about when building a tractor in future....

So the throttle linkage fell apart, and at the same time the key switch failed? Sounds like that tractor could use some TLC.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with a battery disconnect switch.

If he didn't have one, I'm sure in an emergency he could have quickly ripped the dist cap off, or a handful of wires at least.

Good to have a plan in your mind ahead of time in case of such situations.

He had to realize that it was running away, turn the key, realize that the key didn't work, think what's next, pull the choke, realize that the choke want doing it, think what's next, and go for the battery. I'm sure it ran away long enough to scare most people.

Where you save time is having a plan, and not stopping to think "what do i do now". Gas or diesel, think right now, "what would i do if this thing suddenly ran away"? If you have a plan in the back of your mind, you'll be ok.

If the 560 owner went straight for the dist, instead of the choke, it likely would have been faster.

Lots of thinks to have in your mind ahead of time for the sake of safety:

What if my motor runs away
What if i wheelie too high
What if i start to slide backwards on my ramps while loading

Planning ahead will save time and keep you safe.

that's the reason I run a light spring on mine that will pull it back to idle in case something comes apart.

He was Lucky it could of ended like the poor guy earlier in the year, or like that diesel inter tractor that let go on the track, that's shown on here in a discussion about steel flywheels.
The other things that can be good are air kill flaps sled controled and by the tractor driver from the seat. And a lever activated ball valve right up against the carb or diesel pump fuel inlet.
This then has a steel rod/handle attached that can be pulled from the seat by the driver. It then only allows the motor to burn whats in the pump or carb before it runs out of fuel and stops unless a turbo seal blows and it runs on motor oil like some diesels have been known to do..
All the European and U.K legal pullers had to have the tap/ kill flap fitted like this.
