wheel weight vs tire size

The original 12.4-38 tires on my model A were shot and a relative gave me a set of 16.9's on pressed wheels so I figured the price was right an I my tractor was way overweight to begin with so I went ahead and installed them. I was already powering out so I was assuming the taller tire may make it even worse but then again switching from the heavy cast wheels to stamped steel just took a bunch of weight off the rear so I'm thinking that it may help me get a little tire spin. Anybody have a prediction as to whether the taller tire will hurt me more than the weight loss will help me? I'll find out for sure on Saturday, just curious what you guys think.

Darn. That's what I thought. I was hoping that someone would make me feel better about shooting myself in the foot. :D The new tires did bring my hitch height up a good three inches so I'm at the legal max height now. Hopefully that'll help a little bit.

Sell or trade for a pair of 13.6 . In my eyes they are the best all around tire for a mild tractor. It's very rare I see anything over a 15.5 unless it's a NTPA tractor and they got more in the motor then you can buy a new truck for.

Its not always a bad thing to choke out. I have won plenty of
pulls going down the track and smothering out. Yeah it doesn't
look as cool, but a win is still a win.

I've never thought that tire spin was something to hope for but I suppose if you're on a stock JD it would give you a good feeling.

What year A are you pulling? If you have a single stick shifter, you have a very low 1st gear. If not,you can change the primary reduction gear between the crank and transmission and reduce the gear ratio to lower the speed. I have a 41 A with some mild engine mods and this gear change done. Last year I tried a set of 13.6 38,I normally run 12.4 38. I powered out in all pulls that day,and changed back to my 12.4's.
Have Fun!

Mine is a '48 but I did swap out the original primary reduction gears for a set from a '51 single stick. When I get the money to work on my G I'll put these 16.9's on it and get some smaller ones for the A.

You are going to loose power because of the added hitch height
and tire size. But on the other hand you are loosing a lot of
rotating mass by going to pressed rims from cast centers. I pull
a 47 twin stick on 13.6-38 on pressed wheels in 4500-6500 and
I can run 2nd gear in 4500. We also have a 50 single stick
running 16.9-38 with a stock bore power block and we pull it
through 9500 and can still be in the mix of things.

Good news and bad news. The good news is that I made my longest pull to date. The bad news is that I still came in last. :D
