I recently went to the national tractor pull in Tomah WI. I noticed that when they were getting ready to take off the engine would rev up and down slightly and then all of a sudden it would take off at a high rate of speed. What is the purpose of this and what is happening in the engine to make it run that way. I also was reading the rules for different classes and I noticed in one class it talks about three stages. What does three stages mean? Thanks for the info.

I'm guessing that they mean three stages for three turbo chargers.

They revving that you are talking about sounds like the loping caused by massive amounts of fuel, advanced timing and large turbos.

to elaborate a little further, the driver revs the engine to 1 make sure the engine wont stall on takeoff (it can be hard to get a sled moving) 2 to engage the slipper clutch on the more powerful tractors. a slipper clutch engages variably depending on your rpm to aid in takeoff. the engine will pull down as the clutch engages and then rev back up as it recovers
