Pierce Belt Drive Governor Problem - won't idle

Pulled my Massey 101 yesterday that has a Pierce belt driven governor on it. After the second hook, something happened and I lost the ability to idle the tractor down. The engine would only run wide open and it was a little scary. I could grab the throttle linkage and bring it back down by hand, but couldn't seem to figure out what happened while at the pull. With the engine off, the linkage from the governor to the throttle on the carb is really loose - like there is no spring tension on it from the governor at all. I had a couple more hooks at the pull and the throttle seemed to respond a little while under load, but not quite like it was.

Any ideas about what may have happened? I will be pulling the governor off soon to take it apart and look inside. Other than throttle response, the tractor runs fine and has good power. I even won a class with it like this.

Saw you pull. It did a good job and sounded nice. I was wondering why you didn't idle it down to back up at the end. Surely can make it hard to get reverse gear without a lot of grinding! Did you make your rear wheel centers?
