HD800 gasoline vs LP.

Getting ready to work on the fuel system on the massey 95 Im building. I have a near new Imco carb,a new Imco regulator and filter/lock and a new aluminum forklift tank. On the outher hand I have a 4V zenith hall-scott truck carb. The engine is stone stock HD800 with 4229 heads and a .060 over bore. I like the idea of playing around with lp but its alot less hassle to run up town on a sunday afternoon with a gas can than it is to get an lp tank filled. There are pro's and conns to both.Im on the fence, what do you guys think?

That's bull.... when you pay less than 3.00 for lp and 10 to 12 for racing gas per gallon, you choose. performance will be the same.

I put a pulling tractor on the dyno with both LP and racing fuel. After getting them both tuned in the best I could, it had the SAME horsepower on LP as racing fuel. Go with LP and save your money for beer.

Sorry I blew up! Should of known better than to put my nose in this forum. I run a Case 800 LP switched to gas. The LP engine in a Case tractor has higher compression ratio than a gas engine thus better power running the LP engine on gas. Course I don't buy racing gas and propane engines use more fuel per hour than gas engines.

I have an HD 800 with 4229 heads that I run with an Impco 200D carb and dual model E vaporizers. I like the LP because it can sit awhile without gumming up the carb and the fuel is only $2 a gallon. There are some HD 800 pullers around here with 4228 heads, and even on super unleaded, they diesel some on shutdown. Pretty sure you will have to run race gas with 4229 heads.

I have a HD 800 with 29 heads on LP. It starts good, idles good, never loads up, is super smooth and responsive. I would be willing to give up some horsepower to keep the LP. Takes more than peak horsepower to make a puller.

I have the same question as plowboy. Do I need two regulators or will one Imco E do the job? Also, This engine was run on natural gas. Will the 200D carb work ok on lp or does it have to be converted??

i was told to change the diphgrams to propane ones but it didnt change the way mine runs. i read that the impco E was good for 300hp

A model E regulator is good for 300hp if you are running it on a V8 engine. When used on a industrial engine like a MM HD800 they are only good for about 200hp before they start to lean out. The second E regulator will help the horsepower at the faster RPMs.

After seeing dyno numbers between several MM engines (even with major compression on gas), the hp difference is negligable. LP is cheap, powerful, consistent, and clean. If you have a local filling station, I'd do it. My stroker is going to be LP and my existing smaller puller may be swapped over for next year. I wish the rest of my every day tractors were.

Okay, I have a new VFF30 filter/lock. Can I just tee off of it to feed the twin regulators or is there a better way? Thanks

im going to try one century M6 regulator. it said they are good for 350 hp and i know i dont have that much. that way i can just run one regulator
