cam timing key

some Mopar engines have keys available to change timeing, you can buy a package of several different offsets. They are cheap and common through various auto parts or raceing parts suppliers. Maybe you want to adapt one to your engine by cutting a new keyway to use one.

The other alternative is to make an offset key. Gary Baker posted a formula here a while back which allows one to figure out the offset in the key useing the diameter of the part and the offset wanted. I do not rember it right now.

I broached a couple keyways in a cam gear, it was a simple and easy alternative. I simply degreed the cam, and figured out where I wanted to change it to. I broached another keyway in the cam gear and stamped new timeing marks in it so the next fella who has it apart doesn't use the original marks.

It usually goes along with grinding a cam and/or stroking a motor.

A cam is keyed to the cam gear. The cam gear has marks to line it up with the crank gear so that the cam does its thing at the proper time in relation to the crank doing its thing.

The marks are like the cam profile itself: a compromise of fuel economy, power, and durability designed by the manufacturer.

Changing the cam timing can fine tune an engine for a certain RPM range, and find added power.

Degreeing a cam is simply measuring the cam's timing and setting it to a certain spot in relation to the crank. Since skipping a tooth is often too much adjustment, and a very rough setting, an offset key is machined to move the cam a little to get it where you want.

if the cam gear bolts on . i use these.
