Hard block question

How much extra piston side clearance is needed with a completey filled block with a 4 inch bore and good forged pistons? Thanks

Don't go building an engine based on what I tell you, because I really don't know, but I think I remember a guy telling me you need 0.004"-0.005" more clearence with a hard blocked engine. Also said that you may hear a little piston rattle when cold with that extra clearence.

You need to have your block re-honed after you hardblock it, because the hardblock will distort the cylinders. Once that is done, you should be able to set it up as a normal engine. If I don't have any specs on a piston I usually shoot for .010-.012 piston clearance.

i should say i agree with cody on hardblock distorting cylinders .I do not agree with piston to cylinder bore clearance .I think he is thinking more in ring end gaps than piston to wall clearance

Heres J@E pdf for forged pistons

Loose will live!! Got to keep in mind on a completely hardblocked engine that more then likely that it is gonna get abused and overheated. A little extra clearance will save you some $$ an headaches in the long run.
