The right fuel for high compression engines

I seen a drum of VP racing fuel on the back of a pickup and the recent article in Antique Puller Magazine got me thinking what Race fule does everyone use for their High compression ratio engines and what brand works the best in there Tractor?

9:1
10:1
11:1
12:1
13:1
14:1 and Higher

VP C12 in my Oliver engine, about the only fuel available here locally that is true 108 motor octane...And in My GVI good old LP Gas.

I think people jump the gun on this a lot. I first got my jd a together I had to run cam 2 or it would knock but was hard starting no matter what. Finally got the timing right and can run high test pump gas any lower and it knocks. I'm running just shy of a 10:1 ratio figured it to be like a 9:85 or something like that.

Cliff when Paul built my engine he recommended 112 octane I have used 110 and it started and ran the same. I think as long as there is no detonation in the cylnders the lower octane will work.

you see this alot....i see it all the time in atv racing all the time also....alot of people way over octane there motor and make less power than they should.....run what your motor builder tells you or go off compression for what the fuels are rated for...if you are way over octaning your motor your throwing money away....Q16 in atv world you can put a lot of timing into a good motor with that stuff and make around 7 hp more on the dyno. :) ...powermist sells the same type of fuels as well

but if you want to make even more power and cost 1/4 of the price go to methnol....55 gal of c112 a while back was $625 55 gal, methnol holeshot from powermist was like $225 for 55 gal but you burn twice as much lol

All of my tractors can run on 87/91 depending on how Hot it is Out BUT one and I use Sunoco 112 in it but I am shure its around the same compression you are!

I hear that if you mix race fuel and 87 it oxygenates the race fuel more and gives it a faster detonation time.... thats what I do anyway. Its also cheaper.

I am running the VP Q16, mixed with 100LL aviation fuel. In theroy I wind up with 108 octane. Running 11:1. I talked with a tech at VP, he suggested I try VP's CHP, he thought I might see an increase in power. They don't like the idea I was mixing their fuel in someone elses. The fuel mixture costs around $14 a gallon the CHP is close to that, only problem is local dealer doesn't have it.

Im just running a 540 cu and the compression could be increased. Just a 450 gas head Ross pisons and a good set of connecting rods. Could have a lot more. Plenty of power for a division 3 tractor. My next one will be a case so I can give Gary Baker a good run for his money.
