Camshaft Lifters

I have a buda 262 and I broke 3 lifters trying to install the cam gear. Can I use used lifters from another engine or do they need to be resurfaced first? I know with car type engines doing this will wipe out cam lobes but I thought with low spring pressures and low rpm it might be alright? Its a stock engine. Thanks

You are right if the lifters don't have grooves in them you can use them the low spring and lower rpm its not like automotive lifter but i think i'd put the gear on before i put cam in motor.

Sonny Bullet told me if they have a nice smooth circular pattern they are fine. He ought to know about as much about as much about cams and lifters as anybody and more than most.

They have to be flat or slightly concave. If worn they are convex and will gall your cam lobes. Why chance ruining your cam? How much does it cost to reface a lifter?

$5 a piece, thats alot of McGolden! some are convex and some are flat with a big enough diameter for the cam to make them rotate,as in a mushroom follower ,high in the center and sloped to the edge would be convex wouldn't it? Reminds me of a limerick I heard once,"There once was a man named gene who invented a se x machine, concave or convex it could serve either s ex but oh what a mess to clean!"

Just think of all the money ($40 for a four cylinder engine) that could be saved by not resurfacing the lifters. Between fuel to haul the tractor to and from the pulls, entry fees at the pulls, fuel for the tractor, etc. we could save somewhere around $600 to $1000 or more.

Lifters need to be a minimum of .002 high in the middle. That combined with the ramp across the lobe and the lifter turns under load, that action greatly reduces the friction and keep those mating parts alive.

Correct! You have to understand why they are made the way they are made to understand the importance of getting them redone.
