I know this all depends on sleigh design and track conditions but I am curious as to what you guys think would be adequate horsepower to pull 6 mph at 5000 lbs with 18.4 x 38 top cut tires. Would 150 hp be enough? Thanks |

You must be talking about 4 and 6 cylinders. I need to see videos of 2cylinders at that weight and speed that will finish in the top 1 or 2 most of the time. Thanks. Stephen

Continental 4 cylinder, 4.75" bore x 7" stroke. I was told the engine was on a dyno and showed 147 hp after extensive head and manifold work. Engine was built by Lemmons.

From what I've seen, head and manifold work are the key to getting those Masseys to run.

should be big enough. just make sure theres enough carberator for it. thats where a lot of builders seem to fall short. also another .25" of stroke wouldnt hurt.

My Farmall is not much over 150 hp and I can run 6mph with full cut 18.4 tires in that weight class. I would think that that would be plenty of power for what you are planning on doing.

I run 100 horsepower in 5500# at 4&5mph on bigger 16.9X38. It's just a bit weak if you ask me. I place consistently, but it's on a pretty easy going sled with a 5-6ft chain. I'd be happy and back in 3rd gear territory with 125 hp. With 18.4, tough sled, short chain, 5000#, and 6mph, 150 would be quite comfortable.
