m pistons in a d

I was wondering if anyone has ever installed a 4" IH M piston in a D case tractor. We want to go to 4" sleeve but it is hard to find a high compression piston for a D, but a little easier for a M. Thanks

Not sure about height of wrist in diameter. You may have more room to wiggle with other heads, but some heads need "right and left" pistons - the chambers aren"t straight down the line. So 2 pistons have the dome slanted one direction, and the other two the opposite.

If you want a standard 4" flat-top with no dome, valve reliefs etc. have you considered Allis WC or WD pistons? Of course all of the later 226 cid engines,ie; WD45,D17,170,175,and Gleaner E combine,all use 4" pistons as well...but all of these would be reversed dome "power crater" design.

Just a bit of info to help you along in your search, The D engine has a 5.5 stroke crank, a 10.75 " centerline rod length and a 16" deck height block. A little math shows the piston compression height will need to be 2.5" for a 16" deck height. thats just the math.

You should be fine if you can find a piston with that compression height. IIRC there are M pistons with a tall compression height, maybe even more than 2.5.

OH, the D series use a 1.233 wrist pin that clamps in the rod with a clamp bolt so your piston choice would be to a piston that can be adapted to that pin size as the rod end would have to be reworked to a different pin size and pin securiing method.

I have successfully put a clamp bolt in the rod, tightened it enough to not close the bore and welded the split and bolt to one piece then had the rod small end machined for a 1.250 pin, slip fit no bushing and it was fine for years so there are possibilities if you are not afraid to think "outside the box.

Good luck, There's lots of power in that engine and not to hard to get out, the engine will also respond nicely to more valve lift and a good cam is some of the cheapest power you can get.

welded rods! a real case/farmall merger huh? use M tops and case bottoms.

There yu go, ran a set for years, D tops ,Massey 44 bottoms, nuther set H bottoms D tops, never had a problem with either.

Yuh gotta love the merger stuff huh?

Really, the skys the limit when you get to workin this stuff out.

the wrist pin is alot lower in a farmall piston, you will need shorter rods or a deck spacer to put them in a Case

if you want a 4" flattop for a Case they are not hard to find, I am sure Don Livingston has some.
