I agree that is is very sad. It is hard to believe that a person would do that. I do not believe that it is a gun control issue though. I own over 59 different guns and have hunted and shot them regularly with my sons since they were a young age. They have respect for them and I dont believe guns are the issue. Its ashame that there are insane people out there like that. I really feel for the familys of the children that died.

It is 28 hours after the tragic events of yesterday and I find it amazing how I can be sad, angry, and numb all at once. I think everyone here has posted some good food for thought. My emotions about this deal still cloud my thinking with regard to the situation but I still keep coming back to the facts as some have you have already clearly laid out--This is NOT a gun control issue, it is a multiple layer issue. Its an issue about the breakdown of the family and support system for each every person who has ever committed a crime like this. It is an issue about our culture where video games glorify and desensitize kids to the true graphic nature of war, gun violence, and crimes against our fellow man. It is a shame that people make money by creating means for impressionable young people to become indifferent to life and basically celebrate all that is wrong with our culture. It's also an issue where our God, our elders, and our fellow human beings have lost the love and respect that they deserve, and in turn a loss of respect for life itself. Had these factors been nurtured and built up in each and every person who had committed a crime like this, we wouldn't be discussing this today.

My prayers go out to the families and community affected and I applaud and honor those men and women who protected those that survived. Many of you know I don't have kids, but I have a couple nephews and niece that I know I will hug a little more than I used to, I cannot imagine them being in a situation like this or losing them in this way. May God's Blessings and Love be upon them all.

I live in the rural south. In my lifetime I seen where the mentaly ill and mentally retarded lived in the remote mountains much like depicted in the movie deleverence . We then decided to build hospitals and homes for those with conditions as above . Then we decided it was to much a financial burden and closed hospitals insurance cut treatments and we put them homeless on the street or try to main stream them into society where instances outburst etc. get them made fun of and emotionally even more disturbed. I am not saying all mental issues are people who want to harm others in most causes this is not the situation however a person who has no conscience or no ability of understanding that they are harming someone or something as in Lenny's portrayal in the noval of mice and men have to have some isolation from society to ensure no ones harmed .jmho

I could see the son of some people I know doing that. They would never discipline him when he was younger, then they pulled him out of school when the Ritalin wouldn't work any more. He goes outdoors about twice a year. He is about 22 now, still living at home, and his whole world is computer games. He bullies his parents if they try to get him to do anything. I wouldn't be surprised if watching blood splatter is his real world, and the transition to a real gun and real blood might be very easy for him. I need to write to my congressmen about those computer games.

All really great comments so far. I too am deeply saddened about this. Yesterday I dropped off a fundraising check at the Children's Cancer Association from an event we had at work. Talk about an emotional place. There are so many kids across the country who are simply fighting to stay alive and it angers me that one guy could decide the fate in an instant for 20 healthy kids with so much in front of them. Not only that, the adults at that school were well respected and great people. And finally, think about the kids who survived who witnessed the shootings first hand - they are now messed up for life.

I believe it is social conditioning that caused this. There are no more winners and losers in schools, plus video games desensitize kids to real violence. What I think happens is that young adults get out into the real world and are hit with reality that causes them to go crazy. What's worse is many seek medication and start taking those damn anti-depressants. If they suddenly go off them it causes very bad things to happen. I read an article about shootings in the past 30yrs and by far the majority are caused by males in their 20s who simply lose it.

We just had a guy in his early 20s here in Portland on Tuesday go on a rampage at the mall and then kill himself. It's the same pattern that keeps happening over and over again and it really has an effect on the community.

Personally, I think depression and violence are caused by people who lack direction - whether it be responsibility, interest in a hobby, career path, spirituality, etc. For some reason as the conservative, capitalistic America that we all know so well from years past continues to unravel, things like this are bound to happen. There simply needs to be a shift back towards our heritage.

Too many wild and crazy video games out there where all these kids do is try and kill people and they can turn it off and it is over. They don"t understand the reality of death.

Please let GOD back into our schools again. When a gunman can get in easier than GOD, we need to reconsider a few things. Our prayers go out to those families; may they find Christ in the midst of tragedy.

Isn"t it hard to believe that people can think of this? It"s what this country has become because of Liberalism! You make a law that you can"t do this and you can"t do that and before long all folks think about is getting home and having that six pack of beer after work and the hell with the kids. I know people that look at me and think I"m crazy for this tractor pulling, it cost too much money, it takes too much time, but they are always drinking and doing nothing with their kids. Talk about something with them. SOMETHING. All this "it"s ok to be a single parent" is for the birds.

There was the same type deal done in china today also but was 22 kids and the monster used swords and knives apperently there"s no guns in china either way that proves that taking guns away won"t stop it. The answer lies deeper than what people are allowed to posses
