604 dodge caravan transmission question

I have a 604 transmission tore apart for a friend. The spider gears came apart and broke everything. The transmission case isnt broke but the pin and gears are destroyed everything else looks fine. I dont know what would have caused this I am going to rebuild it complete and wont get paid for doing the job. My question is what would cause this to happen. THe vehicle only has 40 thousand miles on it at they dont have any money. Have any of you guys seen this before. It is a simple transmission and I dont know what would cause this unless the spider gears siezed on to the pin. Thanks for an answer. Dave Thompson jr

spinning 1 wheel over 50 MPH will break the bolt that holds pin in and let the gears out Check the case over real close it may have hair line crack and leak oil out I have found many of them over the years working at Dodge

There might be a powertrain warrenty on it for 100000 miles or 10 years? Call dealer and have them run the vin.

How does someone with no $ have a 40,000 mile vehicle? And i too would expect it to have warranty? Good luck i dont envy you, btdt . I hope they are as much in need of the help as the helper is generous. It sucks getting used but there is great pride & reward in helping those truly in need :)

I wouldn't be too quick to judge. A lot of people have hit hard times in this economy, and do not have two pennies to rub together. Yet they still have the same amount of debt as they did before they got laid off from a good job that allowed them afford a home and a newer vehicle.

Or you could be like me and get t-boned and rolled multiple times by a lady who ran a stop sign. That has now lost his job and still has multiple surgeries ahead. I can not work, and not allowed to lift more than a coffee cup. I was three miles from home driving down the road with my wife and daughter minding our own business, and BAM!!!

Like I say, I wouldn't judge from afar.

Used to rebuild these. It starts with vehicle getting stuck and spinning one tire long enough to heat up the spider gear on the shaft so that the locating pin snaps and lets the pin float out of the carrier. There is a Transtar kit consisting of sheet metal ears that bolt on with the ring gear that allow the pin to float without coming out. Chrysler might have them too. FYI, if you get a used carrier assy., very good chance you can drop it right in without any shim work. Be sure to install it first w/o the transfer shaft assy so you can be sure of proper drag/fit/preload. Also, be sure to leave no stone unturned going through the rest of the unit looking for debris so none of the hydraulic circuits starve out after the rebuild. Email me if w/any questions.

Right you are there, both good points! Didnt mean to sound judgemental, just wondering what happened i guess & hoping he doesnt get used. I often help people with things myself & like i said it feels great most of the time, once in awhile it really sucks when you get taken. I myself have taken a 50% pay cut since the crash. I have also been on the negging side of the situation. Apologies if i sounded judemental. These things are best discussed in person it seems. Text can come out wrong alot more often.

Thanks for the reply that is what had to happen the vihicle is in great shape but is an older vehicle and worth fixing. will have all the the parts cleaned and go back with new frictions and bushings and everyting it needs. I dont like rebuilding transmissions and only do it for friends or people in need. I dont have a hoist and taking them out on the ground is to much anymore. Thanks Dave Thompson jr

Sounds like what happened to the tranny in my parents Caravan they had a while back. I think it was around a '04. Dad was stuck in the snow in the drive, and he was spinning trying to get traction. All the sudden boom, and it was all over but the crying.
