Farmall M Engine Build

46mpuller

New User
looking to build my stock m into a good 3-6mph tractor
wondering what size engine would be the best and what it takes to have a m compete and win at 6 mph

On a biting clay track with a short chain sled at 6500# I would shoot for 500 cubes or a bit more. Are you going to try and build the engine yourself of farm it or portions of it out? If you are using a builder you should discuss your needs with them for the most cost effective and durable combinations.

6mph in 6500? Sounds like a five figure project to me. I have to get my house paid for before I play at that level.

I've never played at that level, but 18.4-38 full cuts at 6500lb at 6mph is serious. I don't think 500 cubes will be enough to win.

Look at who you will be competing against. Another guy like you who asked the same question: what do I need to win? A 409, 421 or a 436 aint gonna cut it. The little tire 4mph guys all have those.

I would think that you need to be in the high 500's or near 600 cubes and over 150 HP. You are getting up with the very big boys with those tires and that speed.

Don't know for sure, but it will be a lot. 436 is an overbore in the block and a welded crank. Any bigger requires welded in sleeves and a billit 8" crank. Gonna be a LOT more money.
