Are there other ways to "build" a 226 or 201 AC engines for the purpose of pulling competitively but not breaking the bank?

engine re-build kit:$650;head re-build:$150-Motec carb about$175-gov.spring $40;175 cam regrind:$240,this does not include machine shop work.find another job,in the mean-time,to finance this"hobby"-like I did,build this motor one piece at a time,as money allows-DO NOT use a credit card.It took me about 9 months for everything.best of luck!

I guess what I'm getting at is this, I'm having a devil of a time finding needed parts for the 226/201 modification. Are there specific ways to mod a 201 to be competitive and durable? I want not a hand grenade merely to compete.. What ideas are out there
for a rural guy with 40 miles one way to a good machine shop?
