The best way to cut 18/4/38 tires

Best way to do them yourself is to load them in your truck yourself-drive them yo the tire cutter youself-pay for them yourself-and drive them back home yourself and you are done----simple as that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A friend used to do a good job cutting just the tops with a hand held Makita power planer. After shaping he would finish up by towing it down the road with the tires turning backwards to erase the planer marks, as even top cuts were against the rules then.

I with boomer on this. Mean, nasty, dirty work. Take them to a machine cutter. Best money ever spent and you have something good when they are done. Jeff

I tried cutting a set . They came out ok but don"t think I would do it again. I started out by doing a top cut . I started with a sawzall following the leading edge and making sure not to cut the case of the tire. Once I got my rough cut done I used a power planet to even them out. And last I ran a belt sander with 180 or so for grit.

Google tire grinding disc. I have a 7 inch disc and a 4 inch cup. Work pretty well, they are hard on grinders and your arms. Last set I did took about 10 hrs. for full cuts. Yes its dirty disgusting work, but we don't all have the money or a local tire cutter.

Buy a planer to plane back of lugs 4" disc for finish on back of lugs. Then get a 4" cup for front facing do it when cooler or cold.

There are a few tricks and angles that work great on an antique tractor that just can't be achieved with a cutting machine. Granted the machine cut tire look nice, but sometimes pretty doesn't get the job done. I think every tractor puller should cut atleast one set on their own, you will understand your tires alot more after you have stood there and shaped on them for 8 hours!!LOL

There is much more to cutting a tire than just going at it with a grinder. Angles, clearances, curves, etc., all play a part. A properly adjusted tire cutting machine will do everything you need it to do. Many exotic hand cuts are unnecessary. I've cut several. Mike

My own version of tire cutting. Router with 1/2" straight cut bit.
Must use extreme caution to retain your fingers. Finished with a
"RubberHog" on 4" grinder which works very nicely.

Cody,
Only poor machine cut tires that ever left my tire machine were hand cut/butchered tires people bring to me, to be cut after they had screwed them up themselves. I can appreciate what you are saying as I hand dress all my machine cuts tires after I machine cut them. I have learned allot about cutting tires the last 30+ years I have pulled and cut tires both ways. I will not quit using the tire machine. If you want to put the effort and time the best pulling tires will be intially cut on a machine. There is allot of custom settings that be can made on the machine that you will never duplicate by hand. Every brand and type of tire is custom cut. Before I had my own machine, I have had tires cut by three other machine cutters, some methods I liked others I would not use or recomend. MHO.DW
