Work vs. Play

As availability of parts and cost of parts, fuel, and tires continue to skyrocket, are people going to start walking away from the luxuries and fun in favor of conserving their dollars? I can't help but think with people out of work, inflation, and the aforementioned rising expenses, this great sport will suffer as the choking squeeze of reality hits and greater needs require our attention.

I already had to give up straight forward tractor restoration for tractor pulling restorations. At least when you restore something with the purpose of pulling, it gets a little more use from week to week. I'm with ya though Ethan, the cost could reach a tipping point.

(quoted from post at 16:56:42 11/07/12) You are going to have to quit watching doom and gloom on FOX NEWS. Happy days are here again!!!!

So the last 4 years weren't happy for you? Hmmmm...

Well, I cant see it getting much better. Already really dropping off here in east central Illinois. Other then the big classes, like ITPA and IPA. Those seem to really be going good. But looks to me like there is big money in there. What I have notcied is the antique classes are getting smaller and smaller, but the stock barnyard pulls are having good turn outs. I dont know if its economy doing it, or something else. But I hear a lot of guys talking about the price of fuel and entry fees and cutting back. Not traveling as far and staying closer to home. Something must be causing it, but what, I dont know.

Shawn,
Our "barnyard" stock classes still seem to be holding up well in cIllinois.
Lot of fun and comradery!

It's sad because the country was changed forever to a Socialist form of government and I'm sorry but I can't laugh about that like some of you that seem to believe it's a joke. Your kids and grandkids will never have the advantages that you have had. Yes you're right Gary it's a sad, sad day and no laughing matter and I don't care if you watch Fox or what, at least at Fox you could get another side of a story.

Yeah, I heard about you guys over west, just never made the trip that away. Been down around Effingham some and over at Casey area mostly.

x2, anyone who doesn't believe it is extremely ignorant.

Just because you can't afford to waste your money on a good pulling tractor dosn't mean that everybody is broke, Around here farmers made more money this year than ever.

This may get people irritated, but a few will laugh and agree. When I use the word YOU, I am not refering to anyone in specific here.

Society has "dumbed down" and gotten lazy. There's 24 hrs in a day, use them. Don't think that you're on a fixed income because of a lunchpail job and can't afford it.

You want fancy parts, a big engine, a good induction system, learn how to make them yourself, or work harder, smarter and make money and buy them.

I like my tractor pulling hobby. Some say it's a waste of money but I say it makes me work harder, smarter and make better decisions in my business. It's also driven me to learn how to make from scratch or modify existing parts on my own.

And yes, I have a couple kids, a family life, etc. Just like every other person and yes, I'm frugal when it comes to my antique pulling tractors.

Nothing is impossiable but some things take a long time. Today I'm useing a few hours of spare time in the morning to make a set of sleves and billet rods for an engine. Tomorrow I'll probably get up a little extra early and work on my rod design a little more....

Right now it seems the two biggest expenses are fuel and tires....Prices of both have doubled in the last 3-4 years. Well, at least I don't have to buy tires for any of the old tractors, but having to fork out 60 to 100 dollars to fill the truck and then about the same for the tractor(s) for their fuel really cramps my style when I consider the cost to go pulling or plowing.

Shawn W You need to go a little farther west. The prolem with the guys around here we are set up USAP rules and Casey and east dont want to use them. Most pull i have been to here and south are running a 100 plus hooks.Dont know about north of here dont hear of many pulls farter north then Jersyville.

When your Goverment you just elected and their buddys at at the UN. come get your guns email me how funy you think that was!

I agree with Gary, and Mark, things are going to get worse for the working class, each one of us are supporting 20 welfare babys, and their parents who get free money put on their credit card each month, free cell phone, free car repair, free rent, free heat, and with that said I need to go back to work so I can support the 20 babys, and their parents too, What gets me is how can so many people think this is ok

Its actually more like 4-5 of us working class supporting one "welfare-fake diability house hold" They are earning 3X of what they could working minimum wage, So I ask why would they got to work?

Very well stated... and I've seen the results. If you want it bad enough, you'll do what it takes.

It's nice to see the heavy ones out pulling. our local club took a hit last year, but had a pretty good recovery this year. Next year looks pretty good as we get more and more guests. I see the lighter stock and lightly mod stuff going up a little.

I agree i dont make a ton of money at my reg job,but if i can make a part you can bet your but i am making it even better than the one you buy..... verse buying one for big $$$$$ I am making a electric water pump conversion on my M now....lol I see a guy on face book has one real simlar....I started it a while back and just need to weld in the female threaded ends....some day when i get my mill fired up i may attempt to make it out of alum...I am up at 4am and normally go to bed around 10pm when i am not at work i am in my shop working or doing something productive....

No "Have A Good Day" it's a sad day for all of us, those who refuse to read history are bound to repeat it. If you think that this health care stuff is because external_link feels sorry for you I'm afraid you will have a rude awakening. ALL anyone has to do to find out what this is all about is READ external_link's books or better yet you can listen to him read it to you if you'd like because they are on tape. It's no secret but some want something for nothing. Remember "Freedom Isn't Free But Some Are Willing To Give It Away".

I just got home and was reading what was wrote about the election. How many of you actually vote. Mr Bush didnt do nothing correct as far as I am concerned. He ruined the country for 8 years and then dropped out of the picture. Unions and good wages are what we need and he did nothing but break them. Dont complain unless you vote.

WELL DAVE PAY ATTENTION! You are going to get an education you never wanted but it's going to cost you a lot. PAY ATTENTION, well actually you won't have to pay real close attention because it's going to get so bad that even you will be able to tell. Be sure and get on here in two years and tell everyone how great your supreme ruler is.

Just please explain what the nnalert have done that is so great. I dont see it. My family and I have always been nnalert and that will never change. Im just middle income not a rich person so the nnalert do nothing for me.

That's extreme. I am by no means rich, just a school teacher. But I do like to have rewards for hard work and innovation. I believe the President is taking us closer toward socialism.

The school district I where I teach is economically disadvantaged. What I see is an increasing number of people willing to stay at home on pseudo-disabilities collecting their monthly checks and living somewhat comfortably. There is no incentive to get up in the morning and go to work.

That being said, I believe that the country needs to come together. This election split this country by having two candidates so far apart from each other. Like it or not, we have 4 more years of Mr. external_link, we may as well work toward advancing the country.

Dave most of don"t look for what the government can do for us we just want government out of our way. We can go out and find work for ourselves we don"t rely on a union to do that for us. People that want to rely on others are just what YOUR government is looking for. I, for one, don"t need what you evidently think is what a government is for. That"s my opinion Mark may have another, but you are going to wake up too late and realize just what is being taken from you by them making you think they are giving you something for nothing.

Jim I have never depended on anyone for anything or ever been without a job or out of work. Just look at the Work a good Union electrician does that has been thru the proper training and knows the codes. They get paid more but that is why they do quality work because they had years of training. Cheap wages and non Union is what the nnalert want. You surely know that. Why should the rich get big tax cuts. I dont get them the more I make the more I pay. I dont get anything free.

I have been a conservative nnalert for about 40 years. I had my own business with 4-5 employees for 25 years. Like many other small business owners there were times when my employees were making more than me. That's just the way the business cycles go. I always wanted to be able to pay my employees more. Better for them means better for me. Unions want their way or no way. Shut it down!!! More $ for less work. Redistribution of wealth is great until you run out of other peoples money to spend. When I sold my business, taxes were going to take 83% of it. Is that fair? I was fortunately able to restructure it to get it under 50%. Where is all the money for you and your union buddies going to come from after the businesses all close down and the owners take their money and leave the country like happened in Sweeden and England. Dave Thompson Jr. you make me sick!!!!!

See Dave can't comprehend what you said at all Jim. He would rather pay dues to a corrupt union. That's the whole problem with what's going on. They, people like Dave, are so far gone they can't understand what more and more government does to the country. I wonder how he'll like it when they tell him what he's going to do and that he gets the same as someone who does nothing. Bad thing is by the time he realizes what is going on, even though he's being told, it will be too late to do anything about it. They can not understand what people have gave their lives to defend and others risked theirs to get here and then see it given away because they want the government to do something for THEM. It's not the way this country was founded and it's not in the Constitution but it's being done anyway. What a shame.
