massey 44

actually there are 2 heads. the 260 head on 44s and the 277 head on 44 specials and 444s. The 277 head has a little better flow and the valve is unshrouded compared to the 60.

I did notice that the 44 and 444 heads have different part #'s. Are you sure the 277 does not have the shroud? I am not questioning you but I am building a pulling engine and would like to know about the 277 head not having the shroud around the valve. I have heard many stories that only the LP was unshrouded both 260 and 277. I have also heard that all heads are the same and the only difference are the valve seats between LP and gas. I would really like to know 100% positive that the 277 does not have the shroud.

I have also read that the comp. was changed with the pistons,not the head. Bought a 44 for pulling last year, ran good, pulled good, comp on all cyls. was only 80 psi. Tore it down last winter, it had 4 inch pistons in it and was in fairly good shape. Found a 4 1/16 conformatic engine kit with domed pistons and took 1/8 inch off the head and only ended up with 145 psi comp, a gain of 65 psi, but The gas engine is suppose to have 120 psi stock with 3 7/8 pistons. What gives?? I think I have a kerosene head or low comp head. I"m going to cc the combustion chambers and change heads this winter. I have a 44 and a 444 head laying around so I will find out if there"s any difference.
 
i know it is not shrouded like the 260 because dad put one on his pulling tractor. It also appeared to have a slightly shorter combustion chamber to help with compression. I do not know if the 260 lp head is shrouded or not, never seen one. Whatever head you use i would recommend milling it .150", .200 if it has never been milled, masseys need it to get any compression
