If you're replacing the bull nose on the starter you don't have it timed right. It's firing too soon before TDC and at the slower cranking speeds, it's building pressure and kicking back on you.

Pull the starter you have off, clean up the commutator, put new brushes in it and throw 12V at it.

Another thing you can do that will help is to hit the starter with the ignition off, once it's rolling, then hit the key,.
