3800 gm engine

I know this isnt a tractor question but there are alot of knowlegable mechanics who are on this site. I have a 3800 tore apart that hydro locked from antifreeze on top of the pistons.I noticed that the upper intake has a small hole burnt thru it where it goes over the egr. and then filled the intake with antifreeze. The new intake has alot bigger hole and doesnt come close to the egr. Is this an update that they have made. I have replaced a few of these but have never seen one like this. Just a question. Thanks for some answers.

If I remember correctly, they had a sleeve that went into the lower manifold (aftermarket) that protected the upper intake from the heat.
I have replaced alot of them from coolant leaking in. Did it lock while it was running or on start up?

It was on start up so i am sure it didnt bent a connecting rod. It was blowing antifreeze out the exhaust and then after it set a day it filled the cylnders. I build diesel engines everyday and dont have time to be helping friends out with cars anymore. im gonna replace the lower intke as well. you are correct about the sleeve it must ber an update. Im gonna put it back together tomorrow and send it down the road. Thanks for the advice.

My Nephew and me did the intake on my Wifes car a few yrs back and we replaced the upper and lower gaskets along with the intake. We got all the parts from NAPA. The intake was better than the others.
It now has 157,000 miles on it and we just got back from Florida tonight with it!
Still knocks down 28mpg!

Since you mention that about the lower, if I recall correctly, gm says to replce lower with updated one. I never did and never had a problem.

While you're that far down, change out the lower gaskets with the updated ones. You will probably end up breaking the plastic elbows on the passenger side of the intake taking it apart but they're only about $5 for the pair. You're only about 20 mins of tear down from having the lower gaskets taken out. Why stop now?
