Would there be any advantage or disadvantage to running two sets of spark plugs on a John Deere G? I already have space in the block and head to run two sets if I wanted but have never really given it a thought.

Aircraft engines run two spark plugs per cylinder but it's more of a caution thing I think just in case one of them fouls.

Tried four plugs in a 486R flat head. One on top and one on the bottom of a bank. Not enough material on top for support of the plug. kept cracking. Ran two mags one on each side. Sounded cool. Had a hard time firing at the same time. Tried over lapping the timming with the firing. When everything worked it ran VERY hard. But was not worth all the trouble. Plus got caught at the Ankeny Farm Expo. Was hard to explain what I was doing.

Have given some thought to trying it thinking like some automobiles use coil on plug not shure what it will take to trigger them.

Try a wasted spark coil from a V6 turbo or supercharged Buick 3.8 or 3800.
Fire the coil with a Pertronix II module to cope with the low primary winding impedance.
No high voltage wires needed on the distributer.

timing is different is you run the plug in the head instead of the block, so they would need to spark at different times I would think. Either way I don't see where its worth it. As long as you have a good hot spark, its all you need. i don't think you'd see any power gain by running 2 unless for some reason you're having trouble igniting your fuel now.

Aircraft use duplicate complete ignition systems, magnitos (spelling?) and all.

If you had two spark plugs in one cylinder and just connected them together to one ignition system would both plugs still spark equally or would only one plug with the least resistance spark alone? If only one plug sparks anyway, then an MSD (multiple spark discharge?) would be better than two spark plugs when only one ignition system is used.

Depends on who you ask.
Some folk have mounted a centrally located plug
between the intake and exhaust valves where it is
accepted fact for best location. Yet the HP
increases have been modest.
If nothing else detonation tendency would be
decreased. Plus less spark advance would be
required to achieve the same peak pressure just
after TDC.
So yes, a central plug will do no harm. A
central plug with MSD would be even better.

When running-up an Aircraft engine, the Pilot does a Mag Check..

There ALWAYS is an RPM drop when either individual Mag is OFF..

Yes, these would be potential for a performance increase...depending on combustion chamber shape and plug placement..

Just thinking out loud, but is there a possibility of initiating two
flame fronts with 2 spark plugs? Might not be a problem, but it
could be similar to detonation, depending on the location of the
plugs.

About the same advantage as running a 4 electrode plug in any engine.
