I have a smaller cubed G (9 x 6 3/8) that I'd like run run on methanol just to see what I can get out of it. Currently I'm turning around 1800-2000 rpm and I'd like to stick around there.

I've talked to alot of people and have already done alot of research but I'd like to get opinions from some people on here.

I already have a fuel setup that is capable of supplying alot of fuel which is one of the first challenges that comes up.

My main question is timing, I know it's going to need to be retarded a bunch from what I'm running now but how much? Whats a good place to start?

Anything else that could be thrown in please feel free to do so.

Thanks

its been together 21 hooks so far. hits 32-3400 rpm in the shop. Just keep your stuff covered up real well and when it comes apart it comes apart. Its all about learning!

How can you turn a B John Deere at 3000 Rpms. Thats real fast, how long has yours been together. Sounds scary!

I recently switched over to alcohol in my B (8.125 by 4.75 3000rpm). It seems to really like it. Also it liked more timing than 114. I made a few more changes last week, so we'll see what happens this weekend. With any luck it wont scatter all over the track!

Thanks alot guys. You all brought up points that I did not think of. As far as buying it my neighbor sells VP fuel so I can buy any amount I want from him. Also, I do have a fuel cell on my tractor already.

Shoot me an email Derek I'd like to talk: delhotalfarms@gmail.com

We both seem to think similar and you, like me, are one of the few on here who have the balls to spin these things way past stock RPM.

Thanks

E 85 works real good as a fuel, running it in a good size B. Its 110 octane. We have tried running alcohol as a fuel. It does real good intill it get cold. Then it gels up and makes a mess.

It also absorbs water like crazy too. I wouldn't want to leave it in the carb any longer than you have to. It will be a rather large rust ball in not much time at all.

I'm running a decent size unstyled b on e85 an it really seems to like. This weekend will be the first pull on it. We have put a load on it and it seems really strong.

From many years of drag racing using racign gas and methanol I will offer this to you. The fuel alone does not offer any more power than gasolene by its self. What it will do is raise the octain level to near 140 and thus you can run much higher compression in which gives you more power. Also, you mentioned that you felt that you will need to retard yoru timing. Since the octain and thus the detination level of using methanol is higher, you could run MORE timing since it wont detinate so quickly. But remember that the piston needs the proper amount of time to cycle at its optimum speed and length to obtain maximum power. Your timing wont be so critical to keep it frm detinating so you can spend more effort 'tuning' the timing for optimum power.

Your engine will run a lot cooler on methanol which is another advantage but keep in mind that you can't normally carry more than about 5 gallons of methanol and it is usually purchased at the track. You also need to have firefighters experienced with alcohol fires at the track because methanol fires do not show a flame. I think you also need to use a fuel cell and not just the gas tank.

Thanks for the info, I did not realize methanol had that high of octane, for some reason I thought it was lower than that. Right now the fuel I'm running is around 125 or so.

something else you need to remember. Methanol is a killer to aluminum and any kind of fuel lines and seals that arent designed for it.
It takes alot more methanol than gas to run as gasolene mixture for power is about 12 to 1 but alky is about 8 to 1 so you use lots more of it. If you arent getting into detination problems, you might be better off just stayign with racing gas. Things to think about....
The crap burns the heck out of ya eyes too!!!!!!
