I been curious about this for some time. Not just tractors but anything with a turbo some people cover the exhaust pipe up during transport. I have been told if you dont the turbo will spin and wear out the bearings quicker. Sounds far fetched to me I dont see how it possibly could. Any thoughts guys? |

Dont get me wrong I cover mine up to every time. Mostly just to keep weather bugs and anything else out of it. But I dont see how the turbo could spin the air would have to be able to go somewhere.

i operate a trackhoe at work and we load it with the bucket to the back of the lowboy and the engine is to the front of the trailer and it has a curved pipe on it and we never cover it when we haul it and have never replaced a turbo on any of them i operated since i have been there 27 years. not saying it wont hurt a turbo but we just havent had any problems with ours.

Johninmn, If an exhaust & intake valves are open, then the air has somewhere to go.

The exhaust and intake valves on the same cylinder would have to both be open for air to circulate

Yeah I've been told if you don't the turbo will spin backwards. I dont know if there's any truth to it or not but it sounds like its possible. If I had a tractor with a turbo I would cover it anyway just to be on the safe side.

If you have a curved straight pipe or a curved extension on a muffler and it's facing the front of the trailer it can scoop up air. The dealers in our area cover the exhaust when hauling tractors with pipes like I'm talking about.

I think this is mostly because of the turbo spinning without oil pumping through it. My BIL always covers the front of his turbo on his truck for transport, but maybe also in case it gets some weather. Of course, his charger is a custom built 4.1" with a 3" cover, and alone cost more than I have invested in my tractor.
