John Deere G pulling pictures (others welcome)

I thought I'd share a couple pulling pictures since it seems like theres not too many that seem to get posted. Others are more than welcome to post their own pulling pictures.

8000 lb. class 1st gear 2000 rpm. Came only within a few feet of going into the pulloff with a couple of 4020s and a MM G VI.

6500 lb. class 1st gear 2000 rpm should have pulled 2nd and would have done a little better, I also didn't have enough weight on the back.

Nice tractor.

You ought to grab yourself a copy of "Machinery's Handbook" and calculate for the bursting speed of your flywheel. Then give some consideration on the idea that maybe that kind of rpm might not be worth the slight, if any, gain you might get over say 1,500...? You're probably getting peak power below even 1,200 depending on what all you did to it.

Maybe consider a cover to slow down the flying pieces?

I use 4020 style weights too. You don't have a picture of your rear weight bracket do you? I had made brackets that let me set the weights ontop the rear axle's of my G, but I moved my wheels in so it'd fit on a different trailer and can't run those anymore.

You must have it good and stripped to get into 4750#. Mine has the cast centers still and all the stock equipment, with 14.9's it weighs right at 6000. Replacing my old tires with new Titans added 400lbs alone.

I agree with Rwolfejr... It's impressive what you can do with a good cam and head vs. winding up a G to 2000 rpm. Disaster lays ahead if this engine assembly isn't balanced. I guess to each his own but I'm more impressed with torque than speed.

Thanks alot guys for the replies. The engine is bored and stroked, different cam, Murphys head with spark plug in the head and block, bored out bignut, and other odds and ends.

I have heard alot of stories but have yet to see a 2 cylinder flywheel "burst". They will get stress cracks up around the 2500 range so I always try to stay below that. I understand your concern but I can assure you that there is no way the tractor will pull the same at 1200 RPM as it will at 1800-2000. I should mention that it does not hold 2000 the entire way down the track. I would say the average RPM is around 1650-1850 or so. Really theres very few people that run 2 cylinders at stock RPM around here.

Thanks for your concern though I'm not trying to downplay you or anything, I actually am considering a guard just for safety.

(quoted from post at 16:13:47 07/30/12) what kind of tack you runing and what kind rules do they have good looking g like to see it pull

I just have a cheap tach from autozone that works OK. The rpms are checked with a mechanical tach in my shop at the flywheel. Rules........if it can drive off the trailer and onto the track and look kinda stock it pulls :D

(quoted from post at 17:39:11 07/30/12) the only thing i've pulled this year is the engine from my A...that is a sharp looking G though. where are you pulling at?

Thanks, I pull around central and north central Illinois.

I have a good cam and head, it's not just some run of the mill G turning high RPMs, to me one compliments the other. Actually I really like the balance on my engine, at a full pull I don't hardly feel anything sitting on the seat.

Pretty good looking puller IMHO. I like G's and have two of the old girls, ('51 NF and '48 GW) but neither are modified like that. I pull Div. 1 type tractor with 60 plus HP, that's "investment" enough for me. I might mention that Erb Bros. out in Turlock, Calif. used to build puller G's with pretty good results and one of the first things they did was eliminate the fan drive and use electric fans...but maybe that isn't legal to do where you pull, IDK.

Thanks guys for all the comments. I forgot to mention that it's actually a GM, not just a G so it means a little bit more for me.

Yep, good ole Donnie. Is that your real name? For for reason it sounds familiar.
