farmall needs help

I think I need sum help pulling. I bought a Framall M from a guy its a puller because it has a front weight bracket. It smokes some but he said all good pullers smoke just look at a prostock. It has about 40 hp what can I do for more power. I talked to the nice lady at Dennys and can't wait for all my stuff to get here. I want to degree my cam. What does that mean? I always pull 225 feet, but last night I pulled 225 twice, but on the second sled I only pulled 197. Why is that? I always either spin out or run out of power. Which is better? Do I need matched tires? I have one newer big tire, and one old squishy tire without much tread. What tire pressure do I need? If I spin out do I need to lenghen my hitch? Mine is 16" high now should it be higher? I did get a 4th last night, but the only other tractor in the class got 1,2, and 3rd. Is that fair? When I complained they said he and his olivers were special since he was a presadent of sumthing and came a long way from illinoys. I was told if I didn't stop whining about getting a ribbon they whould staple one to my forhead. Any I really neede some help so I don't always get last.

P.S. Anybody know how to get this staple out of my head?

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

It would be more meaningful if you showed the rpm that the 66 HP was being shown at. If not at one of the checkpoints on the tach the number is meaningless. If the HP shown is at 540 on the tach thats good HP for a M. Send another pic of both gages if you can, a dyno can be made to say anything.

Unless you have deep pockets I would forget about pulling and invest your time and money in something where theres a better chance of winning like gambling or the lottery.

I had one more thought. Look at the tires that are consistently winning and go find a set just like em.

I just read your post again and noticed something I missed before. You said you talked to Denny's and can't wait for your stuff to get here. What Stuff? It would be interesting to know three things. 1.Whether you have flat top pistons or a dome piston. If you look in a spark plug hole you can tell just using a small bright flashlight. 2.What the casting number is on the head? You have to remove the rocker arm cover and it is located in the center of the head. 8777, 8060, 8574. 3.What is the bore? By removing the oil pan you can measure bore from the bottom end of the engine. I am sorry to say this but if you have an 8777 head and flat top pistons then things like changing the cam, carb, & ignition are not much help. This picture is of the dyno with my Farmall M with a Farmall 450 engine I picked up cheap that was slightly stuck. I broke it free, honed the two cylinders that were stuck with the pistons in it, ground the valves, and put it back together with the used head gasket. It has electronic ignition and I have modified the carb and at 1600 high idle it has 66 hp at 540 pto. Not bad for an engine that has blow by and smokes a little blue. I don’t say this to brag because 66 hp out of a C-281 engine is no big deal but to point out that with 40 hp spending a lot of money without knowing what your short block has in it may not produce the results you want. One last thing, I say all this assuming that you had it on a dyno and verified that it has only 40 hp and that you tuned it to the best hp it will produce. If not then that should be the first step. My Dad had a guy he knows who had an M built up with the Denny’s 6” stroke and 3 3/8” bore who called him because it did not seem to run right. When Dad put it on the dyno it only had 50 hp! When it left the shop it had a lot more. So if it is not dyno tuned then that is the first step. Anyway I sincerely hope that helps and regardless of other’s willingness to help I definitely am willing to give you some pointers if you need them.

If you can only make your engine give 40 hp on dyno then you have a lot of room for improvement. My Dad has a straight M with the 8060 gas head that makes 55 Hp at 540 on the dyno but it has a really good governor and if you pull it down below 540 it will only go up to 56 Hp. He once had a very tired M that would only make 43 hp but we never had it apart and it is possible that an M could have 3 7/8" flat tops in it and I don"t think you could make them give 45 hp because 49-50 is the best I have been able to do on a 4" flat top piston. Meanwhile a C-281 engine (farmall 450) can easily produce 65 hp with dome pistons. Anyway send me an email if you want help.

Just put some 2 stroke oil in your gas to make more smoke and put about 50 psi in the soft squishiy tire and you will be winning in no time!!!

you definitely need matched tires. cancel all orders from dennys if you can. their carb and ignition parts are crap and their hp claims are total bologna. THe higher and longer your hitch the better traction you will get. I would recommend tearing down your engine to see how big a motor you have.

DON'T worry all your puller friends are in the same boat your in. When they staple that ribbon to your forehead nothing will come out and you won't feel a thing, otherwise good-luck. ggp
