we always thought that the gear box off an Allis Chalmers little round baler would work good but never did go ahead and do it.

Automotive differential and a custom straight shaft for the flywheel and pulley.

does it matter what kind of differential chevy, ford and what about the pulley. i've "heard" that wont stay together if it's stock.

The entire diff casting has to be used. Most conversions are a mid air contraption without proper bearing, shaft and gear support.

read some archives and see that a car differential is the way to go. any thoughts on what kind/type and what needs to be done to it?

I've seen a G with a right angle gear box feeding the JD hand clutch. He was running a big block. This one was in western MN. There is a JD A just south of St. Paul with a V-8, followed by a diff driving the flywheel. Both seam to work ok. The G has pulled a number of times, don't know about the A.
