Cutting tires yourself-how to

I know there is alot of people that cut their own tires. I mainly run farm stock so I don't want anything too special. I figures I would just topcut them and that should be fine.

Whats the best method regarding tools for doing this? Will an aggressive wheel on a grinder do the trick?

I used one of those multi-layered 4 1/2 in. wheels
on a real good grinder, to sharpen some old already
cut tires. Worked real good. Need goggles and a
mask. LOL

A friend used to do it with a hand held power planer. He showed me and it worked pretty quick and smooth.

the rubber shavings can be blown off your tractor with air. if there's ANY oil anywhere, it will stick to that though and you'll have to pressure wash.

Cover the tractor and might want to drive the tractor onto a big tarp. No matter how you do it it makes a big mess. I used a power planer and they work slick and quick. To taper back the back side of the tread bar you'll need a rubber-hog wheel and grinder. Do a search for rubber hog. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

a buddy of mine used a belt sander. start with 80
grit to rough em down and then fine-tune with a
finer grit belt or a disc sander. leave at least 3/4
to 1" bar in the front so you can sharpen down the
road.

Using the planer we like lots of soapy water and stiff bristle brush,
scrub first get rid of grit to preserve the blades,
apply before each pass will act as lube and also keep blades and drum cooler to prevent rubber buildup
>It works for us.

I use a power planer. It is safer than a grabby wheel. I have even used a hand plane but tiring but if done over a long period of time not too bad. Just use a sharp blade. Have also used a sand paper disc on a 4 1/2" grinder 40 grit paper but is smokey.
