The last time I pulled a tractor was in 1973, '38 JD D. Well I bought this old '54 Super C, we farm w/JD's, and was wondering how to get started, good links and rules or associations. The first tractor I had when I bought the first of this farm was a Super C and I guess nostalgia took over.
Any help would be appreciated and would like to stay in a pretty stock class so I could still use the old SC for pasture harrowing and some light drilling. Also would a SC even be competitive? Thank you,
Charlie

Take a look at The Antique Tractor Pull Guide. One book that contains everything you need to get up and running.

A really important thing is to have a good idea of your weight before you go. Many times I have seen first timers, or once a year guys show up and they are 50 lbs heavy for the class that they should be in, so they end up being the lightest tractor in the next heavier class. Many times guys have said "well I work this tractor so I can't be taking stuff off" when they are really talking a 15 min job. So take off anything that can be readily removed, and take it to your local quarry and get it weighed.

I don't know how much you remember from your old pulling days, but I would say the most important thing to work on with an old stock tractor heading out to the pulls is your balance. If you truely are stock, then you will be entering in the lowest class and traveling at the slowest speed, so balance becomes very important.

A major part of balance, and a very important part to modify from stock, is your hitch/drawbar setup. You want it to be as high as the rules allow, and very rigid so as to transfer as much weight as possible from the sled to your tractor. Length may vary depending on specific tractor, chain length, and track type.

If you can get a good balance, then you should be able to use up everything a stock tractor will give you in low gear. You likely won't win, but you can go home and be happy that your old tractor gave everything it had.

Give her a tune up, and go to the field. Make sure she runs good under a heavy load. Then you are set.

After that, you are into tires, motor, light weight parts...... Money.

Good luck and have fun

Thank you very much, your points are well taken. I really just want to play w/pulling and still be able to use the tractor for light work.

Forget " cheaters never win , winners never cheat ". It's " cheaters usually win , winners don't get caught "

My son and I do ok pulling in our area so I invite you to come and show me how I am cheating. That statement really irks me. What I have found over the years in pulling is that it is the stupid people that never win and if you gave them the choice of any of the top tractors in any class to set it up and drive it they still couldn't make it hook up. Now as for a Super C they make great pullers.

Stupid people take a farm tractor and try to make a dragster out of it. Smart people appreciate what they are and what they did.

Hey Loose handle,I actively farm and have several tractors that I use around the farm and I have several stock antiques so I have respect for old tractors, many I bought in poor condition and brought back to usable condition. My pullers were built out of parts that most would have hauled to the scrap yard. For example my 40 DC was just a rearend with a bad transmission that I pieced together and made a respectable tractor out of it. So if that makes me stupid so be it.

I'm not worried dboll. I think that most of us know that it takes a certain kind of person to make a statement like loose handle's.

Im my short time of tractor pulling, unfortunatelly, I have found out that 'stock' is waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy wrong of a name for what they pull now. Just because a tractor is rusty and looks stock with no bling on it, doesnt mean that the engine hasnt had 10 thousand dollars or more spent on it. I tried to pull a JD A stock and found that the local pullers on the Ms had twice or three times the power i had and still pulled as Stock. So, i offer you good luck and go have fun for yoruself but dont even worry about winning. I gave up that idea long ago.
