First tractor for a kid to pull

I was wonder what would be a good tractor for a kid to start on. I was thinking something in the 2500 lb and up class.

Something with a hand clutch is good for a kid. If
something isn't right, they just pull the handle,
everything stops, and they can sit there. You
don't have to keep your foot down or worry about
taking it out of gear.

I have an H with a low/low it works good for a new puller, doesn't need a lot of rpm and goes slow, so if something happens there is time to react to it. Learn how to handle the tractor and then gradually move up. Plus the low/low you could pull from 3500lbs to when you are tired of lifting weights.

Garden tractor pulling would be a great place to start..

A Late Styled JD "B" would be a good starting point..cheap, Creeper gear 6 speed, controls well positioned and very simple (and Durable)..seldom will you "Break anything"..
In Original condition, you can pull it down until it quits and not hurt it..!!

Farmall A, B, BN, or Allis B, C, CA. All can be
found for under 1500. AC's can be found under a
grand and have pretty good stock power.

Something bigger i would go with a Farmall H or
Super C. The Olivers are good, but the shift pattern
can be tricky for a novice operator.

I like the idea of the hand clutch tractor for kids to start on as Northpuller suggests below. It's too easy for a kid's clutch leg to relax too much and the tractor could lurch unexpectedly. I would recommend something heavier like a MM UTS that has fenders, closed platform and hand clutch. First gear is a little tricky to find in the middle of the shift pattern (unless it's an early UTS), but a tractor like that is a blast for kids to run.

I have a couple of young boys that have started pulling, we have a Farmall A with a BN front end we pull 2500lbs and up, a ford 850 that we pull 3000 to 4000 stock classes, they have done very well with both no issues.

How well do the kids do with the small Farmalls. That kinda what I was thinking but didn't know. I have 950 we pull so I was thinking something lighter than that.

Theres a boy around here that pulls an 80 john deere.. he's about 8 or 9 and there's a family of girls who pull a 560 Cockshut they range from 7-teens! Although i'm a red man the hand clutch seems to be the way to go for the kids, but be sure to let them get plenty of practice riding around the yard.. i taught my wife to back up to the sled by backing up close to a tree with a chain wrapped around it and then tightening the chain! Good luck and glad to see the Young interest!
