John Deere A transmissions?

One time I read on here that the first gear in the model A tractors that were made in the 1950s was a bit lower than the six speeds in the late 1940s tractors. Does anyone know whether or not that's true? I'm going to buy a '51 to go along with my '48. One will be for farming and one will be for pulling, just don't know if one would be any better than the other to use as a pulling tractor. Any thoughts?

This is correct about the 50's A tractors. If you're going to use it for stock pulling and do little or no modifications, I'd use the straight 6 speed on the 50's years. If you're looking to build it up, use the older one so you have more ground speed and a lighter setup.

Thanks. The target I need to hit is a max weight of 4500 lbs. and no more than 45hp. so the creeper first gear would be nice. Do you think that a '51 would weigh any more than a '48? Externally they're pretty much identical.

The lightest I was able to get mine down to was 4800, that's stripping all the hydraulics, getting rid of the roll-o-matic, and put pressed wheels on it.

Starting with sn584000 in 1947 the A became heavier as well as several other changes. The older A can easily make 4500 lbs. even with Powr-Trol. In these older tractors one can use the primary reduction gear and clutch drive gear from a 50-52 A to lower the ground speed of all gears. The 51 will be the best puller even with higher weight over the 48 because of the lower 1st gear.
If you really want a 4500 puller go to an older A and change the reduction gears, install gas carburetor and manifold, and engine upgrades as desired. Most engnine parts from the 51 will fit 41 & up models giving lower weight and same horsepower.

an A can be 5000 or less...we had a stripped peg wheel 51 A in the 4000lb.....no air breather/power troll.....and a 48 A has the fast low tranny which is lighter...so it should make it in the 45 easy with the air breather cast assembly pulled and the power troll pulled off..
