John Deere G help/info

Hi guys, I'm going to get into some pulling this spring/summer/fall and just looking for some general tips.

I currently have a JD A which I've pulled a few times, but I'm looking at a JD G to buy which I can modify (the A is a late 1952, so not into modifying it). Just wondering some of the modifications you can do to a G and how hard they are to complete? I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I have tools and can usually figure out how to get something completed. I also have access to a machine shop.

I've looked at the murphy's engine site...but its unclear as to which setup builds the most power, and what it takes to install the kits.

I've also heard about people modifying axles...wondering why?

Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm wanting to get into the bigger tractor pulling, but want to do some antique pulling first to learn my way through it.

Thanks!

First thing to figure out, is where you are going to be pulling, what the different categories/divisions are, and what the rules will allow.

There is a big difference between pure stock all original parts at 2.5 mph, and stock appearing full cut 5 mph.

You can throw in some M&W gas pistons and get around 50 hp, or go up to the 1000 cubic inch range.

I have a 70 with a set of .125 over Murphy's pistons with stock block, head, manifold and carb. It does well at 3 mph stock type pulling.

Give us a few more details on the pulling you will do and we can help you decide how to build.

Well, I'd be pulling I guess in SW Iowa or western iowa (possibly some eastern nebraska). I guess I'll have to look into the rules a little.

if you are really interested in pulling and competeing with a JD call Richard Wenzig at 641-782-4266 he's got a 70 JD that is a good one and he says he's retireing from pulling. it's bad a$$

6500 and 7500. Have 16.9-38 tires. 1st gear is 3.0 mph. It is a very early 53 gas 70. don't know if the tranny is different than others or not, but it is quick.

Never even close to having issues in 6500. A good track will tie it in 7500.

Haven't dynoed it yet. Just working on repairing the pto clutch this winter.

It took a full season of pulling to break it in. I would guess by the seat of my pants that it gained close to 5 hp during break in. Gained 5 psi cranking too.

Even got on the plow this fall for a fun plow day. Lots of fun, food, drinking, etc. :)

Mark-

That is actually who I was going to set out to compete with. I've seen him pull multiple times, and he is always at the top of his game! Does he have an email address or any way to get pictures/prices/info???
