Case 400 ... specs and pull potential ???

Looking at a 1955 Case 400, standard wheel tread, how much does it weigh (no fluid or weights)? Any engine specs for displacement and horsepower? How about it's potential as a pulling tractor in stock class? Thanks for the info .....

I don't know how much it weighs, But it can be made to weigh a lot less. A pure pulling tractor just needs the parts in it to go forward, and backwards slow. A lot of weight can be lost. like a combine rear for your heavy front. a rack and pinion from a small car instead of your heavy gearbox and arms. Even a aluminum radiator. Electric waterpump and fan. weld on hubs etc. A 870 engine should be a bolt in deal. Also it seems that with a (little) money any old tractor engine can be made twice as big as original, with 4 times the hp. Vic

Thanks for the info .... interesting stuff. Our pulls here require pre-60 tractors to be stock OEM though so your modifications would put the entry into what is called the "demonstration" class. Never thought of the modifications you mention though.

I've got a row crop 400 gas that I've pulled a few times. They are a 4x5 engine, 251 cubic inches. The nice thing about a 400 is the transmission - 8 forward speeds. The lowest 3 gears are all lower than 1st gear in a Farmall M or MM U. In stock form a 400 will pull pretty good in stock classes and easily have enough power for the lower gears. They are heavier than a Farmall M, Oliver 88 or MM U. I've got my 400 row crop almost down to 5000lbs, but I've taken off quite a bit. Standard tread tractors tend to be a bit heavier and it wouldn't surprise me if your tractor were over 6000lbs the way it sits.

Vic is correct in that the later engines will bolt right in. The 870 gas was 301 cubes, diesel was 336. The 830 (much more common) was 284 gas, 301 diesel. All of these engines are the same stroke, just bigger bore.

Click the link below to see one of my hooks earlier this year. My tractor runs good, but I have some pretty neat plans for it. If you need more info MEl and dboll on this forum are good guys to talk to.

the latest cover of Antique Puller has a 400 pulling. it does well up to 8500. the 8 spd trans are nice for low gears, would be easy to put 870 engine in. good pullers

Do you really think your buddies tractors are stock. It takes at least 75 hp to pull 5000 lb on a short chain 3 mph. Vic

Here are a couple of pics of the 400 pulling. I think this was 10,000 or 10,500. Had weight box up the whole way and made a full pull. By the date on the pic this was 10 years ago. after this pull I add all the weights I had room for, maybe 7 or 8 hundred pounds and pulled against a IH 650. Box up the whole way again headed for another full pull and half way out the track found out I should have been holding the shifter in gear. It stops real quick when it jumps out. 1st is the same gear set as 5th. This tractor has 10,000 hrs and apparently has some wear on the gears.
