How much does RPMs effect a creeper gear tractor?

I have a 52A that I pulled Saturday. I have been working on getting the carb set and missed it quite a bit on the load adjustment. When I got it under a load pulling the sled it started smoking and choking down really bad and had to throttle it back about half throttle. Then it cleared up some.

I ended up second and was covered by 6 ft. Would have being able to run at WOT really have effected the outcome much? Talk about taking for ever to get to 171 ft mark. Seemed like I was never going to get there. LOL Thanks JJ

I'll have to go pull the cup and look. It did not smoke gray or blueish like oil. It was black like a way rich situation. JJ

good thing for you, tractor pulls are NOT timed. It does take a little longer, but as long as you are up at the top, who cares! lol

Okay a little follow up with additional information. Checked the oil bath. It is still full. The whole story on the carb. The idle curcuit has been plugged. Last year I ran the tractor with the load screw set where it would idle somewhat and where the books say it is supposed to be but I had the keep the choke partially pulled out.

Over the winter I found out that if I turned the load screw out farther I could run the choke wide open. It will throttle up just great but just does not idle well now. But when I hooked it to the sled I let it pull out about 10 feet at 1/3 throttle. When I opened it up it started to pour out black smoke and started to stumble down. I throttled it back about half throttle and it cleaned up somewhat and pulled okay.

The choke was not pulled on. Just wondered if it would have pulled better if I could have had the throttle opened up. JJ

Could have been the load was set too rich, but setting at high-idle should have had it pretty close..
I am wondering if you have checked the air-inlet stack for obstructions..??
Mud-Dauber nests can cause a serious obstruction..especially when they drop to the dog-leg above the air-cleaner..
Remove the oil cup and run a water hose all the way to the top and flush that pipe out real good..
What happens when there is an obstruction is that the suction pulls oil from the ventilation pump and down the carburetor..makes them smoke like an old steamer..(under heavy loads only)..!!!
Let us know what ya find...!

If you would have been able to run WOT I don't think it would have changed the out come of your hook.
My experience pulling with a creeper gear is to throttle back toward the end of the hook if you have enough power, usually you can pickup a few feet or more by throttling back.
I say you have to earn your "creepers licence", you either know how to pull with a creeper or you don't. Once you get your licence its possible to be a hero from time to time.
