Case 400 vs Farmall m

What are your opinions on a 400 Case compared to a Farmall M pulling division 3. Dollar for Dollar what would be the difference in building a 500 plus engine. I seen a nice one in a barn tonight for sale cheap.

The Case is probably a few lbs heavier but on a diet could be under 5000 easily. A very strong engine mechanically, 5 mains, room for 5 1/4 bore or more with 7 1/2 stroke capability will put it mid 600 cubes. They have a strong 8 speed with nice gear selection. The 800 was a Case o Matic which had a high idle of 2250 The 700 was the straight drive version of that. Wonder if NATPA would allow 800 rpms in the standard shift? Rumour has it that one of the respected M guys is building one but nothing that I can really hang my hat on for confirming that. Those tractors are out there waiting for you serious pullers to discover. I am presently finishing a more moderate 350 CID version now and expecting good results.

Who is the engine builder that you are talking about. Farmall M tractors are very competitive hard to compete against in the 4500 and above classes. Gary Baker builds a very respectfull 436.

(quoted from post at 17:54:20 02/18/11) I will take on any and all International M"s with my old Case 400.

NEcasepuller, Where are you from? I'm located in N.C. Penna. (Case country) near Williamsport Penna. Why don't you bring your 400 and come down and play with a bunch of other Cases a couple times this summer?

What Tractor model won King of the hill at the Tunica Ms Southern Nationals 7500 lb class 5 mph for 3 yrs in a row. What Tractor model came in second in the 4250 King of the hill class. I'm not a M guy, but you've got to give the devil his due. I drove one to much as a kid, always though it was looking back at me. LOL Vic

2090: You will be getting some competition this year! Another case 400 will be on the prowl this year, hopefully.....

I also hope my Farmall 400 is ready to go! It will be a 400 showdown!

Looking forward to seeing you guys again! DK

400 Case, darn hard to beat em. Theres one that pulls with us and is a usual winner. I personally like them a lot, you don't seem to see a case very often and its nice to see something else chuggin down the track. I happen to know where a fairly stout one is going together right now.....If I didn't bleed IH red I'd build one too!

3 years, but not 3 in a row. Jim Benjamin is one heck of a puller, and an M Farmall is one heck of a tractor. However, when about 35 to 40 percent of the tractors in that KOH class are Farmall Ms, the chances are best for an M to win it. It works the same way for the Ollie that won the 4250 KOH. If you put all the tractor makes and models in a hat and drew one out for each class, it would more than likely turn out the same way; Farmall M in 7250 and an Oliver in the 4250. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not trying to take anything away from either brand or model. I'm just trying to put in some useful, pertinent information on this particular comment. Also and again, both of those drivers deserve some credit. The names Juder Smith and Jim Benjamin have been printed many, many times at the top of many, many lists.

(quoted from post at 20:17:10 02/18/11) can i bring a green tractor up and play?

Absolutely 630, we get the better tractors in NC Penna and Some from NY. 5 Star General has been here as has a strong G from the southern part of Pa, not to mention Remley and Coltons stable of tractors. We are putting a new track in this year about 200 yds from my house. All are welcome with 3.5 --6 mph and Cliffs runs a strictly stock farm class. Johndeereman is a regular here as well. Please do come we will enjoy your company and participation... mEl

When our tractor was a 400 it was competive at 336 ci. We changed sheetmetal to a 700 and it became a 3-4 mph winner. The front tub is different on the 700 (a little longer about an inch)do not know if that is what helped us. We start at 5000 the higher we go the better it pulls. Tractor runs 1800 rpms at the start of the pull and 1800 at the end.

Good to hear from you Jerry, do you pull NATPA, back here in Pa. that has never really caught on, classes are just speed limit and tire sizes and cut n noncut with drawbar rules, nothing more complicated than that. Nobody scrutinizes your tractor to see if all the parts are "correct" Just come and pull. mEl

A friend has a stack of Case 870 gas heads, another friend is a Case nut and owns a dealership and has hoards of parts for the Case. If I get time in the near future, I'll flow test a stock one and one with some work done on it, as well as measure some port areas and take some velocity tests. At least one would have an idea of what there is to gain and what size engine and speed it would support.

But by simply looking at the castings from the Case and Farmall, I would go for a Case without any doubt. But then again, I'm a closet Case nut.

The Smith brothers are very competve and very nice people. The advantage the have is they have 4 tractors that run same class so it is kinda like if they let you pull your tractor 3 times and let you reajuist your weights. But not to take anthing away from them they are very competve and if you beat all of them you have had a good day but like i said before congrualtions to Juder .

400 case has the better speed selection than a M 3rd gear is almost equal to the M 1st my friend runs a 400 case very good pulling tractor I perfer the M,s just add more ponies

yep he wants to sell them, but what are they worth? I'd like to buy them myself and set aside for a Case project.
