Farmall 450 engine swap

I have a Farmall w-450 I was given that I'm going to rebuild for pulling. The head and block are cracked so I'm leaning towards swaping in another engine. I would like to go with a diesel and am leaning towards a 4bt cummins, but unsure how that would work, if it even would.

Any suggestions or ideas on using the cummins, or reccomendations on another diesel to swap in?

Thanks for the advice

301 out of a 806 farmall. Not sure what's involved, but I think??? that they have the same bellhousing bolt pattern. I also thought I read a little while ago that a DT 400 series would go in there too.

Advice I got a long time ago is that if you use the 6-cylinder IH motor, you have to use the corresponding 460/560 or _06-_56 side rails.

Thats what I was told, but wasn't 100% sure. Also, thats why I was considering the 4bt cummins, shouldn't be any bigger than the stock 4 cylinder.

I'm not against using a 6 cylinder IH engine, but would the 450 trans and rear hold up to it?

The 450 rear is not a problem. It's basically a 560 rear. People put well built 301's ( up to 500 cid) in 460's. Your rear is heavier than that.

Buzz, 560 rails with the 450 bell to use the C 301. For the 361/407 use 856 rails. For the 400 series, 1066 rails.

Hope things are ok with you these days. Been thinkin bout you guys alot.

What tractors did the 301s come in? I'm assuming they are a 6 cylinder IH engine? Are they turbod? or could they be?

From researching it I'm leaning towards doing a IH diesel vs. the cummins, seems alot easier and I won't have to mess with hoping the bellhousing/flywheel works.

Thanks again for all the help so far!!

There was a D-301 That came in 715 combines. There are manifolds to place a turbo on em.

560 flywheel clutch and pressure plate with the 560 engine back plate, then use 560 frame rails it will be pretty much a bolt in swap. If you have a W400 I wouldnt chop up the sheet metal, I dont know how many of those were made,,,, Id find 560 sheet metal or something,,,,,,, Binderlite hood??

A real good 282 with a good pump with or without a turbo runs decent.

Thanks for the help. Were any of the 300 engines used in trucks? Similar to how the 400s were?

As far as the sheet metal goes, the stuff I have isn't any good, it was laying on the ground and is rotted away, is there a big diff between the w-450 and 450 sheet metal as far as making it work for this project?

Been doing some searching for IH engines to use in the swap. Found a 310 diesel, d358 and a dt466. I'm assuming the 310 would be the easiest to swap, but how would the dt466 work in that tractor? and what adapter plate/side rails would I need to use. If what I read is correct, I'd need 1066 side rails, what couldn't find much on the rear adapter plate.

Thanks again for the help
