I like the rims that are recommended on the tire. I think that is 17 in I have a set of 18.4 on wider rims I think 18 and I have always done better with the narrower ones.

18.4 rim width was and should be 16", tire makers were no dumbies, they put them on what worked, too wide and the sidewall angles out losing it's vertical rigidity and causing the tread to cave in

I have 16.9 38's on 16" rims and I like th way they look and work. I have a set of 18.4 30's on 16" rims and they look fine but if I did it again I would use 18" rims for 18.4 tires.

I'm about to mount a set on 19". I saw a set on 18's and really couldnt even tell they were sitting any wider. I'm going to use firestone 151's that are about 15% tread, so i figured if I widened them out I outta get a bigger (wider) footprint and get more traction to the ground.

Surely if you measure across the tread, that is what you get. With a wider rim you will have to run more pressure to plant the entire tread. And with higher psi. your tractor won't settle as much as the weight comes on. But with higher psi your footprint will shorten. It's good there is not one perfect answer. Vic.
