I am looking for an early model john deere engine. Picked up a little garage project to help a buddy out and im having a heck of a time finding a 404 deere engine for some reason! My buddy has a bad block and the crank has been turned .030 already so I dont have much to work with. This is just a farm tractor and he wants it put back stock so if anyone would have one of these engines around southern ohio please call 304-576-3135. If no answer leave message.

Gallipolis Ohio. It depends on the price and what it is is to how far I can travel to get it.

The 329, 359, 414.. (5.9L & 6.8L) normally have a different backing/mounting plate, and will not directly bolt in a 4020..
Without looking.. (and maybe a little help from some others..) the only application with a transmission housing that size, was a 4055 that had the 359.. and I think it was the clutch housing that was different.. (same setup as a 4030)
I think the 6.8L would be great in a 4020.. but its easier to bolt in a later 404 or 466..

Start checking old combines and industrial equipment. There are a bunch of Dubuque 329/359/414's in those applications too.

What I intended was to watch out for the Dubuque 239,259 & 414 when looking in combines & industrial equipment. The engine may not be the Waterloo 404 series.

This is a really early 4020 diesel that has the weep holes in the block. The casting number is R-33180R. How many of these engines that are mentioned above will bolt back in this application? I would like to find a running 404 diesel with low hrs but a good block and crank would be ok too.
