Carb work on 450

I have a Farmall 450 that I use for pulling. I took it the other day and had it on the dyno. It has the 264 block in it and made 42 hp. I have it switched over to 12 volt with electronic ignition and a hot coil on it. I have built the mid section up quite well with hd clutch and hd ta and ta clutch in it. The guy the had it on the dyno said that it needed more fuel even after he turned the screw in. What should I do with it? I am new to pulling and could use some help if possible. Thanks for your time!

You should wait till the end of the season and then pull the carb. Send it to Matt Gall at Motec Engineering. Tell him what you have done to the tractor and what your plans are (farming, farming and pulling, pulling only, etc)
He will open up the venturi and get you more fuel. He boils and rebuilds the carb in the process for about $75 (don't quote price, it may have been less) including shipping back to you. After he rebuilds it, he puts it on the dyno and tweaks it to get the most hp. He did my carb on my SMTA and it is AWESOME!
The only word of caution is he is slow! Make sure you do it in the beginning of winter to make sure you get it back in plenty of time. I just sent an H carb in about three weeks ago and talked to him on the phone. He said he is hoping to really speed things up. It used to be just him, but now he has hired two additional people.
BTW, did you mess with the timing at all? I picked up a lot of torque there.

I have not messed with the timing yet at all. I am wanting to get the carb done, change the cam and possibly do some headwork(bigger valves) over the winter months. Atleast as much as money and time will allow. Thanks for your input, I will call him and pick his brain as well though.

You've got alot of work to do. Our Super H, with stock block, bore, & stroke, 1/4 step head pistons is running 39 Hp. Our 400, same equipment is running 58 H.p. Our little 450 gas, with better pistons is cranking 68 Hp. I'd like to do you tractor work...Don't think your mechanics are pulling engine specialists.

does the tractor miss out. like it is running out of fuel? if you are only getting 42 hp you have something really out of wack. you should of adjusted timing while at the dyno,is the governor responding to the load.i would get the thing running right before doing any performance work take the carburator apart their are only a few parts in them and see if their is any thing plugged up etc.you should be making 55hp easy

I would do the carb if you haven't rebuilt it yet. Mine made a noticable difference.

Like they said, get it running right before you go nuts on other stuff. If you can't make a stock tractor run, what makes you think you can pull decent with a hot tractor? (I know it sounds harsh, but it is kind of the truth)

You said he turned the screw "in", the main jet should be turned "out" all the way for max fuel, if you need more fuel drill the main jet out, go baby steps until it starts to smoke, if you go too big all at once tuning with the main jet will be very touchy. For a stock 264 engine a custom cam will help, DO NOT put in bigger valves, the only head work you should do is match the manifold to the head. Then, adjust your valves and get it on the dyno, this is where you need to set the timing.
