Case 400 puller

Anyone out there pulling a Case 400 gas (big 400)? How much work to get it down to 5,000 lbs? How big can you go on the bore and stroke if you are willing to over bore the block for larger OD sleeves and weld up the crank? The gas engine came with 5 mains just like the diesel. Was the crank counterbalanced too? What else do I need to know?

I built a 400 about 5 years ago. It will be tough to get down to 5000 with you on it. I pull at 5,500 with about 250# of weight. They are a heavy old tractor. Mine is only 366 with a 4.25 bore (JD 3020 gas pistons) and a 6.25 stroke. With ofset rods I'm sure you could go with a bigger stroke. This is a tough old motor with the 5 main bearings. The split heads do limit you to nearly stock valves as the head is too thin to put bigger seats and valves in. You can go to a bigger bore with a later slieve setup. That along with a longer stroke should make some pretty good HP. Our set-up is about 80-85 HP on my dyno. This has been a fun old tractor and has been very dependable.

630, please elaborate on the weak block comment, that is something I have never heard about the 400 and up series blocks. Am interested in where they break or whatever makes them weak. considering building one in the future and would like to know the weak areas. thanks, mEl

How much work did you have done to lighten it up? We had a guy show up at a local pull that pulled 5,500 with cast rear wheels. I don"t recall if it had the rear PTO/hydraulic assembly or not. I"m sure the Eagle Hitch was gone. Did they make a manual steering box for a 400?

Any idea if the later model heads had larger valves? IE 870 gas.

I removed the Eagle Hitch, cast wheels, hydrolic pump, oil filter assembly, different fenders, seat assembly, a new narrow front end to get rid of the front castings (103 lbs) and a few other small things so that I can move about 250# around. I still have the PTO, my tractor had manual steering. I added wheely bars and a front weight bracket. I don't know about the heads. I'm not much of a Case guy. I pull 3 JD's besides this Case. One thing I like about the Case is the 8 speed transmission gives you a fairly good selection for pulling.

Thanks, LRN

I have seen alot here in pa that have been cracked on the sides of the block, most were patched or welded. maybe they froze, not sure. I started pulling a 400 super when i was 17.

If you can use it a 730 or 830 block works better as 830 or 870 gas heads will fit.336 cid can be done 4 5/8 by 5, 369cid 4 5/8 by 5.5 or 403cid 4 5/8 by 6.Only your pocket book will hold you back on size.I have some 830 gas heads and Don Livingston has some 870 gas heads.Good luck.
