Headgasket or No Headgasket

In some automotive engines, a groove was cut into the head and copper wire was put into the groove for an almost blowout-proof seal. Anybody doing that in the tractor engines?

I have the o-ring grooves in the top of the block. What king of wire do you use?

Hey Mitch do you still have all the Email pertaining to John McQuoid. If so could you foward them to me, got some more NATPA members that would like to see them.

I just finished doing a 310 waukesha that way. Cut a .080 wide .060 deep groove in the sleeve and laid a .080 thick endless copper oring in it. O-ringed the lifter bores and freeze plugged the water ports. (filled block). haven't pulled yet, just ran on the test stand. Seems like it should work great. .020 crush on the rings and completely captured by the sleeve and head.

I have done the copper ring without any gasket on several engines quite successfully. I am doing wet sleeve Case DC engines and put the groove out over the block counterbore. .040 deep, .090 wide groove with #14 common householod wireing (.060)wire butted and silver soldered. no orings or seals of any type just red hi temp RTV. High compression engines can be held with near standard torque figures as the rings are as someone already pointed out are trapped and the head is right on the block. I also helped a man from NS design a setup for a Massey where he cut the ring right in the line where the sleeve meets the block, He said that works great. Its real easy with wet sleeves as the groove can be done in a lathe after making a special cutter. mEl

I will have to look. I probably got rid of them by now but I may still be able to find them . I would like to think all thats over and let sleeping dogs lay for now as for myself what others do well thats up to them.
