Hello:

I have a friend who has a 1941 JD A. He needs a new head gasket, which is best? While the head is off, he'd like to find a better one (the current one is bone stock other than it's bee shaved alot). It has been bored .125 over, block was decked, and it has a 71 carb. Will a head off of a late a work? If so what is the best casting # to get. If not, what kind of aftermarket head should he be looking for?

Thanks.

Murphys Motor Service 573-696-3655 has a performance head/manifold available for that tractor. It has no combustion chamber, which will give you a pretty good increase in compression. With one of these heads, I gained power over a ported/reworked Heisler head.

For a headgasket, go to a local autoparts store and order a Fel Pro 7744SBX. Same thing as you will get at Deere, 1/3 the price.

I have an A head that came off of a 43 A, has big valves and has been ported and polished. Comes with eveything ready to bolt on with the head gasket you need to keep it sealed. Asking $500.00 the only thing is I do not know if it will go on your tractor will need to check no's

Drew:

Is the part number you gave me a complete kit with lead sealing washers and all or just the head gasket it self? I was trying to think of the other head than heisler and murphy's. It was Jerry's, are they hard to find? We're somewhat on a budget and want more power.

Thanks

That part number is the gasket only. I dont know of anyone other than Deere to go to for the lead washers.

The Murphys head is a revised "Jerry's" head. Jerry sold out to Murphys a couple years ago. The original Jerry's head didnt work very well, the exhaust ports/valves were too big.

If your budget won't allow for an aftermarket head, in my opinion your best bet is to stick with what you have. Unless you spend a bunch of money on a cyclone head to weld in the eyebrow area, I dont think you will gain enough with different valves and port work to make it worth your while.

Yes, the later heads will bolt right on. If you have cut a bunch off off your A2325R head, you pretty much have the equivilant of the later heads anyway and wont see any gain.

Is this the new head that was available in late February? What dictated how much power you gained? Was it a gear shift,or the dyno?

The website hasnt been updated yet, but those heads are done and are available.

Power gain was measured on a dyno. Only got a couple dyno pulls with that head on before it tore the PTO up.
