How to get more hp out of a Farmall H

Hi I am building a H for pulling and want to get more horsepower out of it. I have already rebuilt the bottom end with steped head pistons. I have had the motor running and it runs good but it only makes 80# of compresion with the rings not broken in with the original head. Now I am looking for a 350 lp head to raise the compresion higher. The next step is to build a manifold similar to a farmall M LP intake and use a farmall M carb. The problem is I want to get a camshaft but I am not sure what to use. I dont know if I should get a 350 cam or have one reground to different specs? Also if anyone has any other tips or tricks it would be greatly apriciated. Thanks Joey

I am not a h man but 80lbs sounds verry low for a puller. my opinion

That is the reason I am looking for a 350 lp head. The head I used was the original kerosene head. I used it just to see what I had to work with.

Get rid of the kerosene head it is junk! The lp head will help if you can find one for a good price. Another head to look for is the 8043 "gas" h head sometimes you can find them cheap then put money in to it for the same price as a basic lp head. The right piston helps alot also for compression. I have seen a lp head on a tractor but with no compression do to the wrong pistons.

Joey,
Generally when talking about rebuilding the bottom end of an engine people are refering to the crank/rod bearings. With step head pistons that 80# sounds awful low even for a kerosene head. Building a manifold may help, but unless you are using E85 the M carb might just over fuel you, only way to know for sure is on a dyno. If you get another head, just use all the old hot rod tricks; port, polish, match intake/exhaust manifolds to head.

Oh yeah, send a cam out and get it reground. Well worth the money and good manifolds are the 350 gas or the Johnson LP ones then put the M carb uunder that. A 350 carb can be made just as good as a m carb though if the right person does it. There is alot of things to get horse power out of a h. The best is a stroker crank though!

best thing to do is sell or give it away and buy a john deere just kidding but i couldnt resist good luck with your project

If you get the compression up, Air into the engine and air out of the engine is how you make power. the better it breaths the better it will run.( longer stroke, bigger valves, regrind cam ect.)
