Farm stock pull question

I am considering pulling for fun at the county fair this coming summer in the farm stock class. The 4020D is stock, what gear is the best to try to run in? I was thinking 2nd but have never been in tractor pull before. I run 3rd with the 5x14 plow in clay (I run deep). It will bog down going up hill in the heavy dirt areas. Most of the times I have been at the pulls the 4020s have to pull vs 4430s andn 4440s that are turned up pretty heavy so I don't expect to place, just to have fun.

If it is stock, you will have to pull in 2nd gear. but it also depends on the track and how much it weighs... put it in 2nd. have fun

If you are pulling against turned-up 44's, they've got twice your horsepower. I would almost have to say put it in first and read the newspaper on the way down.

To be honest I am not sure what the track dirt is, I do not think its clay, but I have only looked at it from the stands. I haven't weighed the tractor yet either, its cabless with ROPS and a 158 loader (will drop loader before pulling, probably leave the loader frame on), its got some calcium in the rears but we estimate probaly half of a full fill and no cast weights front or rear. I bought it in march while i was at Walter Reed and got some leave time to go home but have only been home really since september. Was a long 15 months, thankfully only 4 of it was "baking" in the sand.

We pulled ours in 3rd in the 10,500 lbs class and it seemed about right, powered out about the time it was spinning out. It was a loader tractor too, so it had fluid in the tires, 2 sets of wheel weights, and the rest we put on the front. Like you said though, I was against 1066"s and other bigger tractors, but I was very happy with my pull. Since then we"ve taken the fluid out and pull in the 9500lbs class. Still use 3rd but the "hot" 4020"s use 4th and go past us. Slide the drawbar in as far as you can, drill a new hole if you have to. If you have equal-lock, remember to use it, it really helps. We pull a transfer sled, not dead weight, I guess you're pulling the same?

I pulled a 4010 a long time ago at 12000 NA class. 18.4 X 38 Second was all it could do I took the leaf spring out of the pump, and two gov weights out that leaves four will turn 3000 or close to it some people took out 3 weights but theirs wouldn't idle right. turned the drawbar around and drilled new hole. Get all the fluid out tires would'nt counture to the ground. The guy that won ran nitrous, hid it in his fuel tank. I didn't find out till 2 yrs ago. he ran 3rd

I forgot 2 qts of yamalube to 5 gal of diesel. take cup off from aircleaner. and try to find a 4230 to 4240 intake. but 2255 olivers and V8 Internationals. are hard to beat. not to mention G1000 MM and 1030 Cases

When my Grandfather was pulling in the early 70's someone told him to take that leaf spring out of the pump. He looked at it and thought the pump wouldnt work like that so he never did, he just put the bigger spring on. Apparantly it will work then.

I forgot about tire size. We still have 18.4-34's. If we had 38" rims I bet we would have to run 2nd.

STOCK there is a large gray area there. I run a dyno service on the side and it is amazing at the #s you see on " Stock " tractors.

There shouldn"t really at this point in time be a stock class.

Division 3 tractors in division 2 is common place.
