CLUTCH PROBLEM JD A

I have a 1949 model

I have a 1949 Model A John Deere, with 530 cu. in. The problem I am having is I have to tightened the clutch so tight to keep if from slippping in higher gears that it is hard to engage and dissengage. It has the older two disc clutch set up. I was wondering of you can convert this over to the newer three disc setup used on later John Deere A's. THANKS.

530ci shouldnt slip a 2 disc clutch. But if you really want to go to the newer clutch; then yes, you can switch it over.

You need the pulley from the newer setup, and the newer pulley should have a gear on it that is two teeth different than what you have. So then you get to change the pulley gear or swap in the whole 1st reduction gear pair from the donor tractor, which is going to slow your ground speed a little.

IMHO, I dont think your problem is too much power for a 2 disc clutch. Does your clutch driver go on too far? And it could be that you have the clutch tight where you need it, and you just need a 60 clutch lever to make it easier to engage/disengage.

I pull a 39 A up to 5500# in third gear, and it is only two disk. Its tight but it dont slip. I changed the clutch lever to a long one. I think that helps a little when you pop it out.

I believe you should take it all apart and clean up the counterbalance and get NEW clutch discs. we have 4 A pulling tractors, from 600+ci on down and have never slipped a cluch when its tight. make sure you aren"t getting oil on the discs somehow....what gears are you pulling in? we pull in 4th in the 4500 open and 3rd all the way up to 6000.
deeredoctor
p.s. make sure the flywheel is tight
