[b:6a4267fb95]Hi,
I'm building a new engine for my Farmall 400. Using 4 1/8 firecraters from a super m. Problem is my cylinder head from the 400 is non repairable. I have a good head from a 1949 or 1950 M, I believe the casting # is 8575. What is the difference between the 8575 and the 8060 head. I know the valves in the 400 head are different, not sure what the casting # from the 400 head is tho. Any one ever use the older 8575 or 8060 head on a 400 engine??
Thanks!

i think you mean 8574 for the other head number. they both have the same combustion chamber. the 8574 has a little bit better intake runners. i have never seen a head yet that maynard at columbus col-weld couldn't fix. the valves are the same between a 8060 andd a 8574. a better head would be a 362174 head. that is a 400 450 gas head.

Thanks,
Yes it is a 8574 casting. My old head is likely repairable, its just the crack is pretty nasty (water breakage from frost) and I have a 8574 head sitting there.
Thanks,
Ken

I f it is an original 400 head it is a 362174 they are a better head.Midwest cylinder head formerly Williams in Nevada Iowa can fix anything and are reasonable.800-873-8506

If the 400 has domes on the pistons,, you need to make sure the 8574 head clears them,, the 8060/8574 heads had different dome locations of the piston heads,, the 400-450 were moved over more than the older heads,, so its possible the pistons may hit the 8574 head. The head can be cut to fit, no big deal,,, look see how the 400 head is slanted on the manifold side of the compression chamber and cut the same slant in the 8574 head if it hits. Needs to clear wit hthe head on the block with pistons at TDC with no headgasket to guarentee they wont hit with a gasket, and the head torqued. Hope this helps,, Id have the 400 head fixed,,, Bates corp has 3 450 heads for sale for 750 each for the bare castings. ChadS

[b:b1abf6430b]I'm using a NOS set of firecraters for a super m(374456R91)I hope to be safe on the head clearence. I live in Canada(alberta) so shipping anything large to or from the US is pretty spendy. It would cost me $300 atleast for freight to get a head up here. [/b:b1abf6430b]
