Dumb question but.....

What is the difference between HVLP guns and the ordinary spray guns. They look about the same from the outside. I'd guess it's in the valve and tip but I never had a chance to open one up.

The HVLP guns have an extra diaphragm which atomizes the paint more. It works better for thin automotive paint but for an oil based paint or primer the ordinary spray gun is better. I do most of the painting I do with heavier bodied paint so I only use the ordinary sprayers. When I need to use automotive paint I have a lot of trouble spraying the paint, especially a metallic base coat. The ordinary sprayer puts out a lot more volume and with the metallic you need more of a mist.

I have three HVLP guns of different makes. The only difference I see between them and the older kind is the paint nozzle and aircap configuration. A lot of precisely placed and sized holes.

They require much more air at a lower pressure. My best gun is speced to need 15CFM at about 30PSI inlet pressure.

That translates to the mandated 10PSI or less at the aircap. At least so the tell me as there is no way for the user to measure that.

Bottom line is the transfer efficiency. Much more paint on the surface, much less in the air and on everything else in the area. I think the requirement to be a HVLP is 65% to the surface.

That makes a huge difference is paint usage and is really important given the prices of auto paints these days.

HVLP guns were mandated for lower air pollution. Works best for primers and clears where getting an even metallic finish isn't a factor.
