Primer or not.

I am getting ready to paint a 48 Super A. I have purchased rust oleum IH red. I have read conflicting suggestions on whether to use primer or not. I would think that it definitely should be used. The argument against it is that the anti rust properties of the paint work better when they are in contact with bare metal. Any help ? Thank you.

if you are looking for a corrosion protection primer, look at something like ppg omni system, the mp 170 is a good value line primer. the go
over it with a surfacer and block sand before color coat
mp 170

With metal you are better off using a primer with most paints. Unless it says direct to metal it needs primer for adhesion purposes.

If you really need rustproofing then apply an epoxy primer first and then put an alkyd primer over the top. With most primers if the paint is scratched down to the metal rust will start
at the scratch and spread outward under the paint. With an epoxy primer if scratched down to the metal it will rust at the scratch only. The enamel paint you are using won't adhere as
well to epoxy primer as it will to an alkyd primer so it would help to double prime.
